After Everyone Knows
Living in a world that is not always accepting

It didn’t happen until after -
Then I visited one day hand in hand
With my girlfriend who is told as she stands
Side by side with me that we look “too similar”
To be together
“In that way”
It didn’t happen until after -
Then suddenly my friends don’t invite
Me as they spend their nights
Together, laughing
In my absence, my identity is denounced to merely
“The lesbian”
It didn’t happen until after -
Then suddenly I’m lying on
Cement, staring at a pair of shoes as they connect
With my torso and wind up
To kick me again
As I clutch my pride flag in the dimness of a streetlight
It didn’t happen until after -
That I met her at the library reading
A book I’ve adored for ages now
And will for ages more
So long as I get to talk about it with her
And I would not dream to change it
