Abandoned Town
-- From the Ghost World Collection
there's this abandoned town
it used to be a place you drove through
on your way to something
it used to have a name
after the new highway, everyone now drives past
and the people followed
but the town remains
windows boarded, glass shattered
food still on the shelves turning bad
the gardens filled with child laughter are overgrown
deer are now grassing in silence
on what used to be a football field
the white chalk faded
cars in the driveway of number 11 has begun to rust
the engine is not working and will never find the way to the main road
in the old school, the paper of the notebooks are turning yellow
on the board it says: don't erase
cracks in the old road gives way to coltsfoot flowers
moss takes over the street lights poles
in the little cottage on the outskirts of the town, a doors is left open
draft coming in and through the window
wallpaper peeling and stains of moisture spreads
forming patterns of its own

Such a powerful poem on change and the challenge of accepting change.
