A Winter's Morning Debut
a wintry poem | Submission for the Frosted Verse Challenge
❄️
I am not a fan of the cold.
So most mornings, I burrow under the covers,
waiting until the sun rises,
and all the while, I kept missing it.
Today, I woke up early,
awaken by a calling
-come and see me before I disappear.
It grabbed a hold of me
urging me to put on a coat
-come and see me before I disappear.
Out the door I went,
transported,
diving headfirst into Winter's wonderland.
❄️
White covered the death Fall bought
and turned it into an ornate theatre.
Barren trees and sprigs of green was clothed in intricate, delicate lace
that I have never once seen replicated by human hands
because it was only meant to be seen and never copied.
Dawn's first light, dressed in ribbon
-pink, orange, and violet-
danced on frozen fractals
to the dawn chorus' rendition of Vivaldi's Winter.
The melting ice turned into fairy lights,
twinkling with every drop.
❄️
You came and saw me,
and there I stood,
simultaneously frozen and thawed,
basking in the magic
of the morning frost.
There are no shouts of encore
no thundering applause.
It never needed such admiration,
for it performs for itself.
❄️
So now I disappear.
And then it's gone
like the white vapor escaping with my every breathless exhale
-here one moment and gone the next.
That's the thing about magic, I guess.
Sometimes it melts away.
But it'll be back.
It always does.
