"Night Cafe at Arles" - Gauguin
Her sister waits
Smoke zig-zags
Over the din – an
Uneven billiard board
Whose balls fall into the south
Corner pocket -
Strangers loudly
Carouse in the corner
She ignores them
With a smile -
Even as they
All watch them
Suspiciously – it's dangerous
The way they think -
It’s dangerous to be seen
With the links of them -
She shifts in her seat -
Waiting -
She has her own reason to be here -
Another tall man sneaks in the back -
Slides into the seat in front of her -
They pretend to barter on her price
For the evening
While passing her a very expensive
Package – she laughs and pushes
Him away - “I’m not that cheap!”
And storms off tossing her drink
In his face.
