A Taste Of Fright

A free verse poem about my personal experience with employee abuse

A Taste Of Fright

On a serene; cloudy August afternoon,

I received a taste

of something nasty- fright

It was the kind of smack

that wouldn’t leave

your lips and tongue

for three days and nights.

One sick-to-your-stomach incident

of screaming, cussing, harassing, and ominous, verbal threats

became a series of gruesome nightmares

that’d make you soak in not just agonizing fear,

but vexation and disgust.

I thought I lost myself-

my pneuma powers went off,

I became mentally and emotionally paralyzed,

and I couldn’t see a flicker of light.

A day of deliciousness,

brightness,

and pleasure

became a day of terror,

aversion,

and dimness.

It left a giant scab

that hurts like a heart ache-

it’s impossible for it

to fade away fast,

but it will become invisible

sooner than later.

  • I know what’s that’s like! I was a cashier at 3 places, all 3 places had horrible managers and WORSE customers. Like, I’m doing my best and just trying to get through the day lol!

This poem is a poignant reflection on a challenging experience, and I admire your ability to convey the emotions and turmoil so vividly. It's a reminder that through our writing, we can share our vulnerabilities and ultimately connect with others who may have experienced similar situations. In the face of such darkness, your words are a testament to resilience and the human capacity to heal. It's a journey from pain to recovery, and I believe your willingness to share it can provide solace and understanding to those who've walked a similar path. Thank you for opening up and sharing this piece with us. Your honesty and the depth of emotion within the poem are truly moving, and it's a reminder that, in our shared experiences, we find strength and connection. 🌟
