A Sonnet for My Shepherd

A Poem by Keila Aartila

Huck - 2021

This is my white Germen Shepherd Dog, White Willow Huckleberry Beast (Huck). He was about 10 weeks old when he became part of our family early 2012.

My German Shepherd Dog is white,

a lot of bark, but not much fight.

We talk a lot, him and me; well, I talk,

he tilts his head to focus on my words.

***

He loves his breakfast at 4 am sharp,

and dinner at 5 – with a stare if late!

To remind me that I’m again failing.

I got what I asked for, my boy watches

***

over me dawn to dusk, oft’ underfoot;

barking and poking and scratches and play

and sleeping, of course, in the comfy chair,

leaving this house coated with too much hair.

***

He is all mine, I chose this silly dog,

who makes me grin and laugh – my guardian.

Huck
