A Soldier's Story:

Surrounded by Death

Looking around the field,

Which is now a sea of

dead bodies,

Scoping out the horizon...

Searching for an answer.

As grenades go sailing

Through the air,

Gunshots that are never-ending

And leave your ears ringing.

A soldier makes one wrong move,

He takes one false step,

& a mine is set off

Blowing his body to bits

& ending his life

In a heartbeat.

The captain is heard

Shouting, "Move! Move!"

One of our men are hit.

Two...then three.

Now all that's left

is you & me.

We gaze up at a smoke

& dust-filled sky...

As the smell of blood

Permeates the air,

Guarding our weapons,

We search nervously about,

We see many wounded souls

and to us they cry out.

Mutilated bodies,

Lying in the dirt

Fought long & hard

Now lying

In their own blood.

Looking around,

More & more I see

& then...

all of a sudden, it happens.

Those tears well up in my eyes

& they do not stop.

You come over

&

Try to comfort me.

But, it's no use.

We are in this whole war-thing

Alone.

It's every man for himself

Even though the others say

That they have your back...

it's all a lie

& all I can do is cry.

Wait. A. Minute.

What's happened now?

What have they done to you?

"A mere flesh wound,"

you say as you grip your side

& force a smile.

Your breathing...

is less...& less...

& more strained.

Hold on!

I'll save you!

I scream for a medic...

but they never come.

Oh God...

Please don't

die on me now!!
