A soft syllable

No

By Emily McGuffPublished 6 months ago 1 min read

-No-

One syllable.

One utterance.

So powerful and yet,

You refused to hear it.

-

-No-

I say again,

Pushing back with

my mouth, but

Yours is unyielding.

-

-No-

I swallow it now,

like salt water

against open wounds.

You smile.

-

-No-

I clench air within

my lungs, but

they shutter.

And you say

-No.-

This hit me hard. The repetition, the shift in power, the way “no” becomes smaller each time, it’s heartbreaking and real. You captured something that too many people feel but can’t always say. Thank you for this. 💛
