Loaded birds on the border,

Smuggled across the sea,

it's a way of life,

it's not very nice,

a smuggler's life.

****

Stuffed the birds inside the pipe,

sealed up their beaks for a night,

don't care if they are alright,

it's not very nice,

a smuggler's life.

****

Australia to Asia,

that's the common route,

caught in a trap,

out in the Outback,

a smuggler's life.

****

Stuff that lizard inside that sock,

watch out those little buggers really bite,

hundred more inside my case,

get them ready they leave tonight,

a smuggler's life.

****

Thousands die, only a few survive,

the trip over the seas,

but the market is good,

so, they continue to try,

a smuggler's life.

****

[Author's note: These words were originally the lyrics to a song I wrote 45 years ago for a ban I played in. Sadly, little has changed. Thousands of Australian species are still illegally traded internationally each year.]

Till next time,
