A Short Rain

An Ode to its Transient Beauty

By Elaine GaoPublished 4 years ago 1 min read
Diamonds from the sky

Light.

I open my eyes to light and then water,

Standing sentry between me

And the rainbow of colors it filters.

Cage.

I see the other side but cannot reach her.

The cascades of tints beyond,

The radiance. Scaled down to a luster.

Me.

My prison reflects my blurry contour.

Shapeless. Colorless. Soulless.

But a conscious replica of water.

Others.

Across the skyline, my companions scatter

From each droplet comes a voice

Welcoming me as their newest member.

Motion.

Charcoal clouds transition to a green fever.

Is below my destiny?

Or am I rejected by it either?

The Earth's luring beauty melds with danger.

I can't go up, only down.

Chained I am by a gravitational curse—-

Descent.

Blue ribbons bend through valleys like craters.

Trees overgrow the steep slopes.

Crowns of leaves sway in a leisurely canter.

Silhouettes.

Lower in, I glimpse a newfound wonder.

An umbrella's canopy

In rotation above another figure.

Faces.

White, misty breath huffs out with a whisper.

Her eyes briefly lock with mine,

Praising the scenery that I render.

Affection.

A bud. Soft grass. The ground travels closer.

This is where I meet my end

How long my existence, I cannot remember.

Darkness.
