A ring of blue

shadow and light

By Sarah LennPublished about a year ago 1 min read

The stone is clear and true

like your intentions

his were too when he first placed

the symbol on my finger

a promise of gold upon his lips

***

it wasn't but a year

before the shine turned

to shadows

I should have stayed away then

after he cast the gem

into the salty sea to be reclaimed

embittered by my hesitancy

he ventured into the wide world

only to return again

with another band

another veiled promise

***

that one landed heavy

to wedge itself within my heart

was it love or fear that bound us

found me in a glass castle

clothed in white

I was young and naive then

I still believed in fairy tales

***

I see your candid face

your breath hitched

waiting for my response

how can you ask this of me

I want to say

when you know how many promises

I've seen broken

how many promises are

buried six feet under the ground

my voice fails me

my body betrays

as I feel my head bob up and down

of its own accord

***

yes it says

yes

your breath releases as

you slide the ring of blue

on my finger

blue as the color of the

bright, open sky

reflected in your crystal eyes

the hue of dreams

***

I cover my mouth with my hand

afraid that

my past will sabotage

the present

or that the present is

a reflection of the past

in disguise

I let that thought slide away

a smile emerging

releasing the fear

I walk bravely into an unknown future
