A Prison

And Love Keeps The Key

By Kelli Sheckler-AmsdenPublished 41 minutes ago 1 min read

you tended the weeds in my garden

watched my blooms as they faded away

you smiled as my heart slowly hardened

another pawn in the game that you played

you stood silently on my doorstep

innocence painted, like art, on your face

casually smearing my lipstick

brushing my senses away

lulling me into believing

there was never a reason to hide

disrupting way more than behavior

then reality creeped in like the tide

until pain became more than a weakness

it was a weapon the weak hide behind

an eraser with collateral damage

leaving me broken and blind

a wildflower without any roots

in a vase where the waters run dry

grinding the petals with your boots

leaving them to wither and die

the planet has become a prison

and love, the keeper of the key

brutally teaching a lesson

that your affection never came for free
