Dog Biscuits, by Jenny Wettersten
Our poems this week, something silly you say,
Does hugging a stranger count in any way?
The UPS guy
And I.
We hugged and he said, “You’re so sweet,”
Not true, but to hear it was neat.
For years he has brought treats for the dogs,
He takes time to chat though his schedule it bogs.
Ever nice and always a smile,
Good to everyone mile after mile.
In the cities, I am told,
Packages get stole.
Up here in the sticks,
There are no such tricks.
The boxes by the door,
With biscuits galore.
Last he was here he gave me a shout,
He said he was glad we were on his route.
Their family dog had just died,
We both stood and cried.
He needed to talk, I could clearly see,
I listened to him with great empathy.
I know this much is true,
We both love our pups, we surely do.
Today I caught him before he resumed his ride,
I asked him to wait while I ran inside.
We gave him a card and a little note,
I think he got a lump in his throat.
This fella likes the pups and is kind,
That’s all that really matters in my mind.
The chaos of the world stood in relief,
As we shared in a quiet moment of grief.
It was okay for this man to tear up,
He cried without shame, about his pup.
The UPS guy in the brown van,
It is he who is sweet, a humble man.
Nonsense Clerihews — by Carol Verant Arola
There was a guy named Pete
He had great big floppy feet.
He liked to walk around town
In his mother’s wedding gown.
~~~
This poems about a gal named Carol
Her name rhymes with barrel.
Her brothers loved to rhyme
They used it all the time.
PaDiF was started by Denise
She couldn’t iron a crease
That’s the only word that will rhyme
Believe me, I looked a long long time
There was a cat named Mr Biscuit
He liked to eat butter on a trisket
He’s a naughty, naughty little guy
But still the apple of my eye
He starts fights with the other cats
And has “time out” and is still a brat
He knocks things on the floor
Something that I don’t adore
If it breaks, well, it breaks
In stuff, he has no stakes
On the other hand, he’s very smart
Playing fetch like it’s a fine art
He’s also learned to catch a little ball
And is so darn cute I wanna bawl
He’s curious and makes me laugh
I’ll keep him on my cat staff
The Day I Learned to Fly
I was walking on a trail so high
A sheer drop that made me sigh
I was distracted, that’s not new
I was looking up into the blue
I got too darn close to the ledge
Before I knew it, I was over the edge
Plummeting down a million feet
Soon the ground I would meet
I didn’t have anything to lose
I flapped my arms like a gol-darn goose
To my surprise, I began to slow down a bit
Maybe if I flapped harder, it would permit
Me to avoid landing on my head
It worked and I must say
My flabby arms aren’t in the way
They are angel wings. And hey
I fly everywhere these days
