A Pigs Fateful Salvation and a Spiders Ultimate Gift
Changes are sometimes where you least expect them
A tale of a pig, a spider and life.
A story of trials, decisions and strife.
A friendship against odds, and impossible forces.
In a barn filled with ducks, rats, chickens and horses.
*
A runt born to die, and a spider with feeling,
a little girls tears, sends a father’s heart reeling.
With a lesson in mind, and a soft spot for his daughter
gives Wilbur a shot and makes Charlotte a martyr.
*
This hard topic is fraught with real love-and hard choices,
pay close attention and hear all the voices.
From the animals mouths, matching the ones in your head,
telling you that real life is more than getting ahead.
*
It’s sacrifice and pain, mixed with some wisdom-and laughter.
Some joy and dread and the consequence after,
the decisions we make from messages in the rafters.
*
Charlotte is kind hearted yet focused and grounded,
she knows what it takes and where loyalty’s founded.
She takes a chance on a pig, to relay a story,
about life, ultimate death and things temporary.
*
From the old barn, to the fair, to the depths of your heart,
every word Charlotte writes, is a profound work of art.
Showing grace and compassion for a true friend in need,
going above and beyond Wilbur's wildest dreams.
*
Wilbur learns about life, love and incredible loss,
and he’s shown true respect for his life, at her cost.
Without asking or wondering, she simply does what is right,
doing what she can do, to diminish his plight.
*
She finds joy in his successes, as any true friend would,
sacrifices for him, like only a mother could.
She understands life and the cycle that’s in motion,
preparing life without her with love and devotion.
*
Wilbur has no clue why she loved him so,
and how it would hurt the day she had to go.
In fact, she never told him about her demise,
maybe she couldn’t bare the pain in his eyes.
*
Then there is Fern, oh,she loved that pig so,
but as we all do, we grow up and let go.
Of the notions we had when we were just kids,
moving on, falling in love, exposing feelings we hid.
*
Henry Fussy, that boy, had Ferns heart beating wild,
first loves are incredibly sweet as a child.
She forgot, not in spite, her feelings for Wilbur,
leaving that pig and Charlotte a little bewildered.
*
Thank goodness for uncle Homer, Wilbur had a new home,
and good ol’ Charlotte found-a way, so she too came along.
They were happy together, all the animals and she,
they learned many a lesson from that one wise old sheep.
*
All these characters taught lessons, E.B. White, wrote them down,
he was well liked by the children in every town.
He wrote books from the perspective of all sorts of things,
but none topped the ones that his animals would bring.
*
His given name, Elwyn Brooks White,
he accused his mother of being contrite.
The sixth child, she would name, she must have run out of ideas,
he decided to E. B. best, his name was abbreviated.
*
I was read this story as a child, and happily read it to mine,
now my children write and read all the time.
I give credit to Charlotte, Wilbur and ole E.B. too,
for the lessons in love and loyalty that shown through.
*
Charlotte: for her courage, compassion and grace,
Wilbur: for innocence, not settling for fate
E.B. for his tenderness, thinking little, not big,
teaching us about friendship with a spider and “some pig”
