A letter to my first true friend

Dear friend,

As a young child you played with me. Comedies, adventure, but too young yet for tragedies. We flew planes and fought pirates. I traveled the world because of you. Together always, our love affair strengthened as my vocabulary grew.

Now that I’m much older, words, phrases, and soliloquies now seep from my cells, knowing exactly what to do and say. I love you. You helped me grow, you carried me through triumphs and traumas, quiet moments and drama.

There’s never been a choice, whether blessed or damned, I write therefore I am. For my great love, words fill me up, and when overflowing I bleed ink onto the page, Love, Anger, Hope and Rage. Some nights, the moonlight writes upon the walls. I awake because you called to me. Words swirl inside my brain longing to be set free.

You have helped me become an expert at describing those eyes, that smile, the way she tucks her hair behind her ear. You have made me calm, kind, courageous while I try to live my life without fear.

Sometimes in my anger I blame you for failing me, but the truth is no matter what I say, she doesn’t want me, and no amount of stanzas will persuade her to stay. Oh my words, we’ve been so long together begging, pleading, surrendering, conceding this long bloody fight. Dripping ink on the soles of lost loves as they disappear out of sight.

Though I lose all that I have ever loved, you will always be part of me. Without you, my life would have been a single crescendo but you made it a symphony.

Much love, Sam

This was a wonderful read. That last line was perfection. I smiled the whole way through and I think we're kindred spirits. It reminded me of my first Top Story. It makes sense both pieces would be so well received by other writers. We all have a bit of an abnormal obsession with the written word. I'm including a link so you can check out my story if you want, but this is not intended to be a "I read yours, now you read mine" thing. Just if you want to read about another writer's obsession to feel more normal. https://shopping-feedback.today/writers/words-of-love-x832609hu%3C/span%3E%3C/span%3E%3C/span%3E%3C/a%3E%3C/p%3E%3C/div%3E%3C/div%3E%3C/div%3E%3Cdiv class="css-w4qknv-Replies">

  • This was beautiful, Sam — heartfelt, lyrical, and deeply resonant. A true love letter to writing itself. Thank you for putting words to what so many of us feel. I’d be honored if you took a moment to check out some of my own work, too.
