A Letter To My Ancestors

For Your Resilience

They must’ve been made of dyneema

Strong presence and a powerful demeanor

Saving more lives than FEMA

15 times stronger than steel

Stopping bullets, making joints heal

You tell me what’s more real?!

I don’t need a dot com to track my ancestry

Their spirit flows through every single breath in me

So f**k your subscription, respectfully

The thought of a family tree

Thoughts of my family on trees

Gives me PTSD

Escaping rapings, chains, whips and being lynched

Yeah you goddamn right imma take them miles when you give me an inch

So imma need you to run me s**t

I’m talking 40 acres and my stimmy

Reoccurring, gimme gimme

Your cup runneth over so I know there’s plenty

But this poem ain’t bout reparations

We can save that for another conversation

Just a friendly reminder that we gave birth to nations

More so a reminder to myself

That as long as my mind strong and body is in good health I need for nothing else

My daily resurrection

is a clear and evident reflection

that I’m covered in a divine order of protection

They must’ve made some kind of pact with God like "yo please look out for my kin

They know not what they do so please forgive them for their sins

And when heaven ready for them, let them in"

I don’t see no footprints, but you walking with me

When I see my angel numbers, know you talking to me

Know you wouldn’t steer me wrong and that’s important to me

You making sure I get what the world offers to me

My heartbeat is the soundtrack of your sacrifice

I’m forever indebted because you paid the price

They say you only live once, don’t gotta tell me twice

On borrowed time, I’ll pay you back in the afterlife
