An Ode to Halloween

"A Halloween Memory"

Halloween is over

The candy's almost gone

Remnants from All Hallow's Eve

Lay strewn across the lawn

A witch, a ghost, a scarecrow

His face a thing of horror

We laugh and howl in sheer delight

And run from door to door

A magical night of moonlit fright

As monsters big and small

Fill the streets with spooks and shrieks

A night of fun for all

The last house looms ahead of us

Way down a darkened road

They say this one is haunted

And we swore we wouldn't go

We gather all our courage

And inching closer still

We make our way by moonlight

To the house upon the hill

Pumpkins glow on porches

One smiles, another glares

They welcome us and light our way

As we ascend the stairs

At once the door creaks open

And peering from within

An old and haggard face

With a friendly toothless grin

A wicked witch with lime green skin

Who seems happy to greet

The kids who giggle nervously

And holler, "Trick-Or-Treat!"

A withered hand reaches out

And through the light so dim

She cackles as she tosses treats

into my pumpkin tin

We've had our fill of fun and laughs

We wish this night would last

For it has been the best one yet

Of all the Halloweens past

Leaves blow through the autumn air

The fog slowly descends

We journey home to reminisce

This night with all our friends
