a glutton for more

i've become a black hole,

a stardust glutton gorging myself

on crumbs of praise

floating in rings around dead planets and

obsolete satellites posing as suns.

i.consume.it.all.

with gustatory glee

shoveling every morsel into my oblivion–

the pain

the drudgery

the fake smiles

the jealousy

the dreams and what-ifs,

my appetite is end l e s s

*

and then i sense it...

chum in the water, subtle at first,

an inky depth brushing along my ragged periphery

with a ravenous hunger set to devour,

and i recognize you for what you are.

oh how your vastness matches my own

your cravings a mirror to mine

but our damage is unwilling to bow.

the heavens weep as we collide,

both broken and bruised,

misguided in our lust for dominance.

even the stars burn with shame, eye witness to

the suffering on these celestial battlegrounds.

yet as we roil and rage,

the darkness starts to bleed away bit by bit,

ribbons of hurt and neglect unraveling

to expose our tattered souls

beaten but still a spark within.

for a moment there is such profound stillness,

no past, just the now stretching in every direction as we lie bare,

and it does not end in destruction.

your grief begins to heal me.

each rift and wound filled with understanding

molding me into something altogether transformed

as I'm mending you in tandem

until we're an amalgamation

radiating brilliance through our scars,

forged anew in a crucible of salvation.

because together,

we are supernova.

Umm... I had your latest poem on my saved list, just went to read it and it's goneπŸ€”. Of course, I rushed here to see if I could find it here and was shocked at how vacant the place looks. My dearest Heather. Not you too!!! But I get it. Nothing lasts forever. And it's even sadder when you can find reasons to speed the change up. I read what you shared with Paul, so I fully understand your reason for stepping back. Vocal isn't all there is. Most of us stick around because of the hobby aspect, and might as well try and win prizes in the process. It's not easy figuring out what the judges are looking for with poetry. I was almost positive my poem, 'Return to Sender' would get a badge. When it didn't, I took a deeper dive into the ones who placed, and I think my language was too 'constructed' and didn't flow from the heart. That, and being too literal sometimes. Poetry is a beast to tackle! But I try. You on the other hand, my friend have written some SPECTACULAR pieces. So much so, that I wondered 'How does she do it?' You have the gift that so many out there wished they had. I come to realize that poetry comes natural to some. Poets like you, Gina C, Silver, Morgana, Sleepy drafts and a slew of others all have their unique style. Styles in which I learned from, and in some cases, try to emulate in my own way. Sometimes it works, most of the time it doesn't, lol. Glad you are branching out and not letting the pen dry out. I read that message between you and Matt Fromm when you wished him a Happy B-day and saw that you joined the 'Writing Battle' 🀩 YES! I did too and got 'Kindness of strangers' I almost swapped because it seemed boring but I stuck with it. So glad you will continue to stick around from time to time. My next thing is trying to get published in magazines. I see the two Stephen's and Mackenzie speaking about it quite often. I just need to learn the process. I already have some of the resources to try out from them. Best of luck, Heather. You truly are a GREAT writer!

Beautiful poetry, Heather! I think often people become so consumed with grief that they miss the ray of hope, subtle, yet powerful when seen for what it is. You delivered hope with words paired with a gorgeous cover image. Congratulations on your top story!

This is some intense stuff. The imagery of being a "stardust glutton" is really vivid. It makes me think about how we all consume different things in life. And that part about two damaged souls colliding and healing each other - how often does that actually happen in real relationships? It's a powerful concept.

Fantastic!!! (This ties in so well with my addiction to people-pleasing and my pastor's sermon on the father of lies and spiritual warfare. The Message translation of the Book of Jude speaks of fallen angels imprisoned in Black Holes.)

I knew you'd have something explosive up your sleeve for this challenge! Pure dynamite! Well done, Heather!

  • Let's see, the incredibly luminous explosion of a star experiencing runaway nuclear fusion & producing heavy elements..., yeah, I think I can work with that.
