A Glorious Summer Day
Mild and blissfully perfect

An Indian summer, mild and calm,
The sun shines in through the glass window,
Lighting the morning in its warmth,
As it slithers slowly across the bed.
***
Dust motes hover in the air,
Highlighted by the sun’s warm rays,
Floating in a slight motion,
As they twist and turn, dancing in the breeze.
***
Birds singing the chorus line for all world to hear,
When the soloist twills it’s high pest of musical notes,
Whistles and coos, music to our human ears,
As they flitter around throughout the branches of the trees.
***
Baby birds screaming in absolute hunger,
Gobbling the worms in loud swallows,
Mum patiently feeding each and every one of her young,
As they wait safely within her nest.
***
Pristine blue skies for as far as the eye can see,
Wispy white clouds floating gently,
Soft looking and clean in their purity,
Like marshmallows atop a glorious cup of hot chocolate.
***
The greenery of the trees and plants reaching,
Soaking up the sunshine and nourishing on its rays,
Slightly ducking and weaving upon the wind,
Welcoming the wildlife to its branches.
***
The sound of the neighbours chittering, chatting,
The smell of sizzling meat upon the barbecue,
A cold one in every set of hands,
As the love of company mixes with the joy of sunshine.
***
My cats stretched out soaking up the heat of the rays,
Their fur standing on end as it reaches for the warmth,
Sleeping and dreaming of their next glorious feast,
As they sun-bake to their hearts content.
***
Roaring of combustion engines and electric tools,
Hovering on sound waves throughout the neighbourhood,
Mowing lawns, pruning hedges, weeding gardens and tidying edges,
Busy as a bee while the sun does shine.
***
A blissful nanna nap in the lazy afternoon,
As the heat reaches its highest pinnacle,
A light breeze skimming across perspiring skin,
While dozing in the lap of pleasant dreams.
***
Hammering and banging from down the road,
As a distant neighbour makes the most of the daylight hours,
Renovating, beautifying, repairing as he goes,
Enjoying the heat splashing across his broad back.
***
Ants running to and fro,
Cleaning the garden of perished insects,
Returning the feast back to their nest, their queen,
As she concentrates on her new babies.
***
Children laughing and screaming in the background,
As they play on the greenest of lawns,
Dashing under a sprinkler when they need to cool off,
Enjoying the bright day with their best friends.
***
Cars flashing past as they head to the beach,
Or up to the rainforest for a hike through the coolness,
Aussies at leisure on a beautiful day,
Adventures into nature to cool down as they play.
***
Sunday, family day and the weather is glorious,
As tribes gather to enjoy the company of family and friends,
Eat, relax, catch up on the local gossip,
Celebrating the perfect summer day as it comes to an end.

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.
