A Feral Love

For Cliff & Blackie

By Andrew C McDonaldPublished about a year ago Updated about a year ago 1 min read

You ghosted into my life

A darker patch in the night

That soon became a shining light

At first you were leery

Shying back from each gesture

Alert for signs of betrayal

Keeping a wicked claw ready

Slowly I worked my way into your trust

Offerings of food and space

Freely given and respected

As I earned my unworthy way

Until finally you deigned to allow my touch

At first just a quick scratch on the ears

As you decided I may be worthy

As I slowly worked past your mistrust

You wormed your way into my heart

Every little purr a trophy

Every acceptance of a caress a triumph

Despite your allegedly feral nature

We became a duo

As I gave food …

You gave comfort

As I took solace …

You offered acceptance without judgment

After seven years of beauteous friendship

You have gone to your feline reward

Yet still I watch in the night

For a darker patch of midnight black

Illuminated solely by luminescent orbs

Some say .. It was just a feral cat

But you were so much more

You gave light, warmth, comfort and companionship

To a lonely old man

You filled a void in my heart

A void now full only of memory

Blackie ….You are missed
