A Day on Martha's Vineyard

An Unexpected Catch

By Celine LoisellePublished 5 years ago 1 min read

Crashing waves and summer sun

on the stone-studded beaches of the Cape.

The summer season just begun,

children smiling, mouths agape.

A single seagull swoops down low

searching for a scrumptious bite.

Finding something down below,

the daring bird soon takes flight.

Unappealing in its beak,

the fowl drops its insipid catch.

An excited child offers a shriek!

Running over for the snatch.

Watching the scene with innocent glee

as the toddler proudly shows off her prize.

But our onlooker smiles quickly flee-

a less than enviable gift from the skies.

A concerned mother springs up with haste,

Prying the object from her child’s grip.

Her face morphing to disgust; distaste,

the child indignantly bites her lip.

In the sand lay the object, strewn-

How a used tampon ruined an afternoon.
