The stars bled in my periphery
and yet I could not turn my head
to witness the end
for you were there, glittering starlight -
the beginning in the midst of oblivion.
How could I face that encroaching doom
with your presence like a magnet
pulling my soul to yours -
melting our hearts into one?
In the hereafter, I recall that gentle smile,
the flashing teeth and whimsical depths
defining those stunning eyes of blue;
so much more awe-inspiring
than the half-lived life
flashing before my eyes.
Even as the roar of the world
threatened to close around me,
to swallow me whole
in its darkness -
your warmth like a beacon
called to me.
What is an end like mine
compared to a beginning like ours?
