A Beautiful Mess
A poem about the illusion of critical thinking and the complexity of human truth.

How Critical thinking is currently taught;
Replace what you know with what you're told—
and that is "critical thought."
But real critical thinking digs deeper,
past the surface of what you’re taught.
When you're told
that anything is because of one reason or ism,
it’s time to think critically
through what’s being sold.
Nothing involving humans
is ever caused by just one thing.
We are too simple and too complex:
Love, hate, trauma, sex, want and will—
they make us this beautiful mess.
Life is too chaotic, too messy,
for any cause or reason to be that clean.
Yes, the Devil’s in the dirty details—
the problematic nuances,
illogical fallacies,
half-truths and shaded lies—
but so is God.
