A Beautiful Day

One to be grateful for

The burr of the trucks as they round the corner, racing along the highway on a mission,

The swish of the car tires following in their wake,

The roar of an engine as it changes down to tackle the hills throughout the range,

And the whistle of the air as they fly on past.

******

The twitter of the birds chorusing their good morning greetings,

The caw of the sulphur crested cockatoos as they screech above,

The chirps of the young beseeching a feed,

And the flap of a wing as it lashes overhead.

******

I swear I can hear the whisper of the sun as it warms my spine,

The soothing croon of the wind as it kisses my ears,

The scream of the ants as they feast upon my toes,

And the laugh of the kookaburra who thinks it’s all hysterical.

******

The crescendo of the frogs chorus as it heightens to a crest,

The crickets pitching their tone to the musical feast,

My baby girl’s squeak as she asks for breakfast,

And her purr of gratitude as she set upon her food.

******

The buzz of the bees swarming the pomegranate trees,

Tasting the nectar left by the birds,

Would I rather be any place other?

No, I’m in my element, happy as can be.

******

Early mornings, the time to soak it all in,

Other than the highway, not a human sound to be heard,

And those driving past have no idea I’m here,

As we all go about our day, oblivious to the paths we unknowingly cross.

******

I sit and send my gratitude to those that walk the path with me,

Those that played a part in bringing me to this point,

The love, the hate, the indifference; all importantly moulded my core beliefs,

And carried me through the years, until I landed here, in a little touch of paradise, grateful for it all.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.
