2020 what a year

Reflection of our times

By Amy Louise BrutonPublished 5 years ago 2 min read

Twenty twenty what a year, toxins fill our lungs and spread fear.

Species on the brink of survival, tears can’t extinguish the fire of this new arrival.

Whispers drifted in from the East, threatening to disturb are mundane peace.

George Floyd became a household name,

not from X factor or fame

but suffering, cruelty and human shame.

Plastic filling the ocean and seas, human waste destroying species.

Anger rising as statues pulled down,

trying to forget that slaves built the town.

Children buried in African mines, collecting minerals to keep digital time.

Masks not worn becomes the new crime, distraction from the county lines.

Tier four no longer belonged to the wedding cake but a prison of our own fate.

Politicians wasted money on medical supplies stored in masses, hands shakes and deals made with private lies.

Fake news was the new catch phrase, hiding Trumps wall of pain and shame.

Brexit deal to be reached, to hide politicians tax evasion and deceit.

Lost track of Days and time, dust blown off books, creativity revived, home schooling, digital classes for young minds.

Diabetes and suicide on the rise, funeral parlours filled to the skies, limited mourners, allowed to cry.

Pfizer saved the day, yet aids sufferers of third world countries were turned away.

New NHS heroes were born yet politicians pay rise of 40%, the masses mourne.

A couple of percent is all the nurses get to treat the dying, yet Food banks grow at exponential rate, charity suffering from the weight.

Austerity at school gates from children’s dinners and their fate.

Yet crime is down, few homeless to be seen, housed because an epidemic wants the streets kept clean.

Violence and drunks hidden away until vaccination liberates our day.

Mass shootings and terrorism kept in a cage, don’t give them a key, to kill more people when we’re set free.

Let our oceans and seas flourish once again, let plastic be a thing of the past, a time reflected upon In aghast.

Stop the use of palm olive oil, let orangutans survive and roam free, build their habitat to how it should be.

Look at 2020 through the eyes of a child, what legacy we leave as it walks its first mile.
