Top Story - November 2021

Your dog doesn’t need to be primped and preened to be the perfect pup. Boris and Doug know doggone-well that being a show dog means more than haircuts and fluffing up. When you think of “show dogs,” well-groomed pups prancing across the stage come to mind. But you don’t need to do all that to get your dog looking sharp behind the lens.

Pups are willing to do anything to get attention. From stealing shoes to sitting on your shoulder, your dog has what it takes to be in Ollie’s Best in Doge Show, as long as you know what to look for as their pet parent.

What Makes Your Dog Competition Worthy?

Dog’s are quirky and fun, that’s part of why we love them. Their specific behaviors are exactly what makes them exciting to brag about with friends, and flaunt on social media. But typical dog shows don’t want to represent what makes your dog special. They show the manicured, unrealistic portrayal of dog life. For this competition, Ollie wants to see what makes your dog stand out, like Doug and Boris’ best fur-iendship.

1. Tenacious Talent

Some dogs are insanely skilled, Boris is no exception. Tenaciously talented dogs can bounce a treat off their nose, and catch it in their mouth or balance on a rolling obstacle course. From paw-stands to diving for treats, to being a great pool diver, it makes them as unique as can be.

Boris in particular always gets the most excited at meal times. If you say the magic words “breakfast” or “dinner” he jumps up and starts circling you—almost like he’s trying to round you up to force you into the kitchen!

Talented dogs know that they’ve got the skill to compete. They’ve been eyeing the treats in the cupboard and they’re willing to do what it takes to win extra-praise and get a peanut butter biscuit. Don’t forget to catch their colorful antics and athleticism on video! You and your dog can win big by showing off their skills, instead of through their haircut or perfectly distilled temperament.

2. Naughty by Nature

Most dogs are vying for this category. What makes your dog's behavior extra naughty? I know from experience that Doug and Boris paw the line, from romping in the mud, then trying to give me a hug, to tearing up their toys and hiding them under the bed.

I’ve got to admit, both Boris and Doug are pretty well behaved … now that they’re older at least! But sometimes when we’re out on the beach we will have to pull Dougs head out of someone’s pocket as he’s managed to sniff out the treats they’ve brought for their dog! In the past puppy days we may have lost a gammon steak and lasagna to an opportunistic Doug too. I promise we do feed them, they would have you think otherwise though.

Nonetheless, having a mischievous and playful dog only makes life more exciting. Dog’s love to play, and they show you too by taking all your shoes out of the closet, or plopping on your shoulders when trying to recline on the couch, and piling sticks on the patio for you to play fetch with. 3. Fierce Foodies

Oh, you definitely know the dog that would do anything to slide the crust off your plate while you’re eating, or wait patiently until it’s time to dole meat leftovers out. Fierce Foodies toggle between Naughty by Nature and food lovers, but there are some tell-tale signs to look for. Food-loving puppies aren’t trying to be naughty. They just love human food and beverages.

Does your dog try to lick your coffee cup clean when you set it on the floor, or wait at your hip as you cook a family meal? Maybe they go beyond that, and drag a fresh loaf of bread off the counter and try to consume it whilst you use the bathroom. Either way, Ollie wants to see your Fierce Foodie’s love of food, from human food to their human-grade Ollie meals. This might take a little bit of sly camera action because dog’s that love food tend to think they’re going incognito as they try to get it.

4. Soft Skills

Is there anything better than cuddling with your dog in the morning? Puppies make it difficult to get out of bed and go to work because of their sweet kisses and face smashed against yours. Doug and Boris aren’t afraid to show their love for one another. They cuddle on the couch, the stairway, out in the sun on the porch, and their love is infectious.

Doug is most definitely the cuddliest, and the goofiest with his curled up smiles and love for affection. He looks like Elvis and can be so clumsy on his long legs! He’s also the grumpiest and demands to be tucked under blankets every evening. Boris is quite independent and as long as he has his ball, he is happy to do his own thing. Doug however is a cuddle bug, and his cuddles are truly a gift. And, in my eyes, a talent worth mentioning!

Document these precious seconds of your dog’s Soft Skills by showing off their best furry-friends, and intense kisses, and adorable cuddle poses. Dog’s aren’t shy about showing their intense affection, so record the love and let your dog officially be the best smoocher around.

5. Heartful Heroes

Pooches shouldn’t be afraid to be themselves. Representing your dog through their hard-work, their ability to overcome, or explore new places makes them extraordinary. Some dogs are great on mountain bike and hiking trails, and lead the way with their tail raised high. Other dog’s are great at overcoming their fears, from jumping in the ocean to trying new treats to getting used to car rides.

Dog’s do amazing things everyday. Doug and Boris are always their best self around each other and around the house, through dressing up on holidays to being the best men in our wedding. Check out the Best in Doge Show, and make sure to subscribe to Ollie today, because no Heartful Hero should remain unsung.

6. Freestyle

Your dog is a wildcard and you should show them off. From doing zoomies around the house to having fits of passion while scratching their back on the carpet. Does your Freestyle dog nap in bizarre places or have a funny way of expressing themselves?

Some dogs are nervous about walking over curbs or try to seek attention by hiding behind curtains. I can definitely relate! Boris is a jokester, but doesn’t like to laugh. He’s so serious in all of his photos, while Doug doesn’t mind showing off his pearly-whites.

They’re both also very adventurous and love to explore. We go to the beach every day but sometimes on the weekends we go to the forest for a change of scenery and they both love running through the trees. Boris especially loves to throw himself into puddles, ponds, mud baths… anything dirty! He brings the free spirited energy we all need in our lives. Don’t lose out on showing off why your dog is peculiar and particularly special.

Winners will be selected from each category, as well as an all-around Best in Doge grand prize winner. Tune in to see which incredible pup will win the special prizes from Proper Hotels & Residences™, Southwest Airlines™, West & Willow, Ollie and more!
