When a person gets a dog, the first thing that they consider is what? AW THAT DOG IS SO CUTE. The cuteness level is normally a direct indicator of what dog breed one might get. To me, this was absolutely the case.
One aspect that people may seem to overlook when purchasing or adopting a dog, is the breed itself and how they live. Yes, you may grow up and love sheep dog, you may not want a 120 pound dog running around your house. It takes some real thought. Fast forward to July of 2017. I was all set on getting a German Shepherd puppy because why else? They are BAD A** looking dogs. I mean nobody can deny that. That's why the police use them right? Well, of course a recent graduate of college with almost no plan on how to use my degree, do you think I researched German Shepherds? HA. no. Major regret in that decision. WHAT DID I SIGN UP FOR?
What I was soon to discover was that German Shepherds are SO much work. They are like leeches, sucking all of the attention from you at all times. BUT this is what else I have learned from deciding to adopt my Tucker:
They are the world's best cuddlers.
Not kidding. They may be massive and overwhelmingly hairy, but they are so cuddly and absolutely love their people.
They are protective.
While not having an overbearingly aggressive manner to them, they take care of THEIR people. They can always tell whether you need help, or are in trouble.
These furry things can sense emotions.
Yes, you read that right. When I am sad, what do I see? This furry thing licking me. Yes I meant for that to rhyme. Trust me, this ball of fur has gotten me through a rough break-up or two.
They are active.
You're looking at this thinking, wow. Okay. So I have to walk this thing everywhere, all the time? Well, kinda. But he keeps me active, and constantly moving. It's a good thing for a girl who loves her pasta.
They are your best friend.
German Shepherds with a little elbow grease and training can be the most obedient dog you can own. If you want to teach your dog to grab a bottle of wine for you, and then curl up next to you on the couch after a long day, then this one is for you.
Adopt a German Shepherd or not. The choice is yours.
