Cats are beloved pets all around the world, but in every cat owner’s information toolbox, there should be a cornerstone knowledge base titled “Understanding Cat Health & Behavior”. However, cats are great animals, and they behave in ways that may be almost impossible to understand sometimes. From the manner in which they speak right to how they bathe themselves, felines are unique. Learning about how they act and respond, signs of illness they may show, and general health issues will not only improve care to your pet but also improve the owner and cat relationship.

Understanding Feline Behavior

Cats are different from dogs first of all in the way that they do not really need people, they look rather arrogant. This independence can sometimes make their behavior rather hard to comprehend. However, everything a cat does – from purring to kneading to suddenly bolting across the room – means something. Cats are known to signal their owners non verbally. For instance, when a cat blinks slowly it means it loves you or trusts you while when the tail is flicking it means the cat is annoyed or excited.

In other words, you can learn to decipher cues that will enable you to address your cat’s needs and feelings. For example, if your cat is laying low it means that he is stressed or uncomfortable. Cats are really shy animals, and they can always be seen to be running from place to place especially when they are attacked. If your cats are in this state, then any attempts to get them to interact will only make things worse. Instead offer your cat some space and some time until it can come on its own asking for your affection. On the other side, if the cat brings its head to you with the purpose of touching or rubbing on you it means that you smell like part of its territory.

The Importance of Early Socialization

More so, information on a cat’s behavior ought to be understood well during the initial stages of its growth. Families of kittens are necessary for the first months of their life as kittens have their critical period of socialization. At this age, they are able to know how to relate with human beings, other animals and even the natural world.. The frequently socialized adult cats have higher chances of becoming good adult cats.

Preventing a behavioral disorder is also facilitated by early socialization. The cats that do not have the ability to be exposed to the different situations when they are still kittens, tend to become anxious or fearful adult cats. Such are, for instance, a cat that has never been fondled and may therefore grow up to be hostile when touched. If you introduce your kittens to new experiences, new people and even other animals, you create the right confident atmosphere which will protect your kittens from possible behavioral issues in the future.

Health and Well-Being: Key Indicators

It must be understood that health and behavior here are interrelated, being a kitty’s health completely depends on it. Signs of ill health in cats may sometimes be seen first through specific changes in behavior. For instance, if a cat stops using the litter box or is literally hiding more than it is usually seen, then more often than not; it could be in pain or feel uncomfortable. Cats are masters at concealing their disease, so one has to pay much attention to one’s demeanor.

Every now and then it is also imperative to take your cat to the vet for check up. This must give your cat vaccinations, flea treatments, and dental care among other parts that your cat will need throughout its life. In addition to these routine visits, it is well-advised to pay close attention to most of your cat’s activities throughout the day. A cat that fails to eat or drink, is anorexic, obese or champions in listlessness may be in poor health and needs attention.

Grooming and Cleanliness

Cats are well-recognized for becoming excellent groomers. It is quite interesting to note that a significant part of the day is spent grooming and while this perhaps depends on a host of factors we can only assume that grooming fulfils a basic biological need such as temperature regulation, blood circulation as well as maintaining tidiness on the fur skin. But, overdoing it or complete change in grooming may the tell-tale sign of a deeper problem. For instance, if a cat has dental issues he will stop grooming his fur because it is painful to lick. Similarly, a cat that is mostly scratching itself may have skin disease or may be stressed.

Just like your own hair, skin, nails, and every part of your body you do not usually see, the same applies to cats and if you own a cat, it is important to occasionally feel your cat’s coat and skin to find out if there are signs of parasites, irritation or infections. It is very important for cat owner to groom their pet via; brushing the fur and nails trimming in order to maintain the heath of the cat. It also carries benefits of being with your cat, that can actually help in strengthening the bond you share together.

Nutrition and Hydration

The other thing that affects a cat’s health and behavior is diet. Cats are natural carnivores, this is they need animal derived proteins in their diet in large amounts. For the wellbeing of your cat fur, teeth and energy level and other body organs, it is compulsory that the cat is fed properly with balanced diet. Inadequate nutrition of a cat leads to inactivity, skin and coat issues or even behavioral changes.

There must be maintenance of proper hydration as well. This is an aspect because cats are not big drinkers and it becomes even harder if they are fed with totally dry foods. All veterinarians recommend providing fresh water to the cat at all times because feline cystitis and kidney disease are rampant in cats.

Strengthening the Human-Feline Bond

Learning more about your cat’s health and/or temperament is crucial to building a good and long-term relationship with the animal. This can only mean that by meeting your cat’s physical and psychological needs, you should be able to win its confidence when in your company. As much as your cat will benefit from a good health or improved quality of life, it also paves way for an improved bonding between a cat owner and the pet.

In conclusion, knowing cat health and behavior is not simply a matter of haggling over issues whenever they develop; it is ensuring that your cat has the best care currently possible. Anything that ranges from identifying changes in the non-verbal communications from the cat to feeding and combing of the cat is useful to the total wellbeing. The better you know your kitty the more you will be able to provide for all its needs and the cat will be healthier, happier and less protesting against having to interact with you.
