The Beach Adventures Of Auri

Point Roadknight Beach

By Matthew DawsonPublished 4 years ago 3 min read

As the golden ball of sun came up in the east gradually inching over the calm waters of Point Roadknight, my four-month year old Hungarian Viszla, Auri woke up and started licking my ears and face to wake me up. It was time for our morning ritual, her licking me to wake me up and me rubbing her belly and her back.

Then we were up. Shorts, t-shirt, and thongs on, off to the beach for adventures, waves, balls, and other dogs. She was super energetic, like a little energizer bunny, never stopped exploring, never stopped trotting along, never stopped being curious about her surroundings.

She would strain at her lead, and I would have to calm her down, but inevitably it was a losing battle. But once we arrived at the beach and she sat down, the lead came off and it was time to run. Run she did. Everywhere. Over the rocks, the sand, but a bit trepidatious about the ocean. Not so sure, well not yet anyway. As the waves washed up on the golden sand, she would run towards them, then back at the last second, not sure what they would do to her if she waited for them to catch her.

Her cute little face radiated excitement, I smiled down at her, talking to her, providing encouragement, telling her the waves wouldn’t hurt her and encouraging her to play with the other three Viszlas, owned by my parents, my brother, and my sister respectively. Four Viszlas was absolute chaos, a cacophony of enjoyable little barks and sounds as they chased the ball and each other, the little one, my Auri straining to keep up, her cute little legs working overtime, pumping along with all the effort she was exerting and doing well at that.

Enter the other dogs, big dogs, small dogs, puppies, ancient dogs, and everything in between. Auri wasn’t afraid, she loved getting to know all the other dogs, wanting to wrestle with them all over the sand. Her adorable little tail wagging as fast as it could go, tongue lolling out the side of her mouth, a smile on her face, or as close to a smile as a dog can get.

Eventually it was time to leave, she attacked the trip back down the beach with as much gusto as she had when we arrived, somehow still having enough energy to run all up and down the sand on the way back as well.

Finally, after meandering along the path back to the beach house, we arrived at the door, and she looked up at me with those gorgeous eyes and an expression on her face of pure enjoyment. It was in that moment, that I knew how much I loved her and how much I would do anything for her. To give her a good life, full of adventures, walks, fun toys, exciting games, other dogs, swimming around like an otter in the pool back in Melbourne, learning that the waves were not scary and having the continued courage to play with anybody and any other animal that crossed her delightful journey through life.

They say a dog is a person’s best friend, well in the short time that she has been in my life, she has brought me a little annoyance, but a massive amount of joy and friendship. She is my fur baby, and every day brings an exciting new activity to help keep her entertained.

She is my little ball of sunshine and joy, her little noises when she sleeps, her affection when she is awake, may the Auri adventures never end.
