He had been wandering the streets, looking for a place to belong. For almost a year, he stayed at the shelter, waiting for someone to adopt him. Eventually, his original family came forward, but they were from a different county, and they hadn't thought to check Saginaw County for their lost dog. When they finally reunited with Yankee, it seemed like a joyful reunion.

However, their happiness was short-lived. Despite bringing him back home, the family quickly realized that their lifestyle had changed. They had added new members to their family, including children, and Yankee no longer seemed to fit in with their busy lives. After a few days, they decided it was best to return him to the shelter.

This was tough for Yankee, but he never lost his spirit. He stayed at the Saginaw shelter for nearly another year, making him the longest resident the shelter had ever seen since Horton started working there seven years ago. His cheerful and friendly personality kept him hopeful. Despite being overlooked by adopters, he remained optimistic and active. Horton mentioned that the shelter staff worked hard to keep him engaged. They made sure he stayed social and had plenty of activities to keep him happy. They took him on field trips, played with him, and made sure he got exercise by walking him three times a day. They even gave him dog toys to keep his spirits high.

But despite all this care, no one seemed to adopt him. Horton suggested that his size and strength might have been intimidating to potential adopters. "He's a big, goofy dog," she said. "I think that scared some people off."

Horton shared that the shelter has a tradition called “getting dressed” whenever an animal is adopted. This means the dog gets a special collar or bandana and a goody bag to take with them to their new home. For Yankee, this small gesture felt even more meaningful, as everyone gathered together to wish him well.

Sending a dog off after so much time at the shelter is always emotional, and Horton admitted it was nerve-wracking. But after hearing how well Yankee was settling into his new home, her worries disappeared. He was enjoying his new life—relaxing, snuggling, and even climbing on the furniture.
