Rockey and Kozmo
This is a story of two very different beings, from the same world but different. One old and one young. Both were looking for something, neither knew it would be the other.
Kozmo is frightened and shaking. He is scared and doesn’t know what is going on. His human friends are taking him somewhere far away from what he overhears.
Rockey is scared and lonely. His human friend hasn’t come home in a really long time. The neighbors have been really nice to him when they see him, but he doesn’t understand why he was left all alone.
The day has come for Kozmo’s big move. He’s so scared when they leave. They drove for a long long time.
Finally, they get to where they’re going. It’s a house! Maybe this is what his human friends meant when they said they were moving! Time to sniff around! What’s that he smells? A cat!
Rockey hears a car pulling up so he jumps on the fence to get to the front yard. Maybe his human friend is finally back. What! 6 people and a dog! What is going on. Rockey gets scared and hides in his favorite hiding spot. He wants to check things out before he introduces himself. Everyday he hears the back door open and he peeks out just a little. He sees a lady fill his food and water bowls and goes back in.
Kozmo peeks at Rockey through the sliding glass door as Rockey eats and drinks. The door is always open just a little but not big enough for either one of them to get in or out. Kozmo puts his nose to tue door to sniff the air. Trying very desperately to catch a waft of scent from the cat. He’s never been close to a cat before but he has chased one. He just wants to play but the cat always runs away.
Rockey is glad for the fresh food and water and is full! He walks around his bowls and towards the sliding glass door. He just wants to stretch out on the sunny part of the floor and take a nap just like old times.
He gets to the door and notices it’s not open big enough for him to get in! He’s a big cat! Way bigger than Kozmo. He wanted in and Kozmo wanted out! But neither of them could get in or out!
One day mom brings Kozmo into the back yard and calls Rockey to come out of hiding. She tells them both that they need to get along because they are family now! She says Kozmo is Rockey’s dog cousin and Rockey is Kozmo’s cat cousin and they need to love each other and to look out for one another.
Rockey agreed because he was old, lonely and hungry before they got there and now he was just old. Plus he liked the idea of having family again.
Kozmo on the other hand had other plans. He said no! And started barking at Rockey. Rockey calmly showed his long claws and smacked Kozmo right in the face.
Every day Kozmo sees Rockey standing at the door he immediately barks at him and won’t let him in. Rockey sits down. Kozmo keeps barking. One time he barked so long he took a water break and started barking again.
Mom keeps telling Kozmo to chill out. She tells him it’s better to love than to hate and says to try being nice one day. So Kozmo finally agrees. The next time he sees Rockey he’s going to be nice. No more barking!
The very next day Rockey comes to the door as usual. He sees Kozmo quietly standing there sniffing out the door. He is prepared to take his seat and listen to Kozmo bark. He doesn’t care about what he’s barking about he only wants to get inside but Kozmo’s always blocking the way.
Kozmo saw Rockey coming and slowly backed away from the door finally letting Rockey inside. Rockey walked all around the house and Kozmo followed him everywhere he went.
Rockey found his favorite sun spot on the floor and settled in for a nap. Kozmo laid down next to him and took a nap too. This is way better than barking at the cat, Kozmo thought to himself.
It took awhile and a little getting used too. But eventually Kozmo and Rockey became best friends. They spend all their time with each other. They share all their treats and favorite hiding places. Soon becoming inseparable best friends.
Cat and dog brother cousins just like mom said!
( Kozmo is our family dog and Rockey is my late father in law’s Ferrell cat.)
