How can I forget my pets, who, without any question, give me the best attention and love and make me feel so important? When I shifted with my cousins to government quarters, we decided to adopt a puppy. We named him Montu..he was a joyful beast. A very lovely and friendly puppy who gets excited whenever he sees children.
At first, when we met him, I thought he was mute as he just walked up to me and put his head on my lap and looked at me with his eyes as if begging me to get him and assuring me that he would forever be so cute and loveable.
Whoever met Montu just fell in love with him. For 4 months, Montu did not bark and I was getting worried.
One day, a grass cutter came over to cut grass and after showing him around, he agreed for a price, and I left him to his work and Montu was watching us.
After he finished cutting the grass, he came to the porch and asked for some water. I went in to get some water and came back with the money.
As I was paying him, the guy said I should pay him more as the compound was big. I reminded him that he had agreed to the price and he started raising his voice. He was lying on the porch looking at him and then, all of sudden, Montu started to growl and then he barked and boy, the mixture of his breed of bulldog pitch sounded like him. The Montu was a beast... a mixture of Ridgeback and Bulldog. At 4 months old, he was a big dog. The grass cutter quietly took the money from me and went and Montu kept on barking till he was out of sight.
I was so shocked by his reaction as he was always so friendly. I then realized that he was so protective of me.
Why was Montu so special? Montu was the only one we adopted, but as years went by, we ended up having 5 dogs at our place. The first one Montu brought home was a light brown dog about a year old who had been struck by someone with a knife and was very wild....we took care of him and, after no one claimed him, we took him in and named him Brownie. He loved to communicate with me in his own language. Then came 2 black puppies named Montu. When they tagged alone with Montu, they waited on the back porch while Montu came inside to me, put his head in my lap and just stared into my eyes. I just knew he brought in dogs, so as soon as I asked him where it was, he ran and barked at the back door. I opened the door and found two black labrodors sitting there wagging their tails but full of fleas. I then recalled it belonged to one of the school teachers, so I fed them and went for a walk to meet up with this teacher. I came to learn her children brought them from a friend's house without their parents' permission and the family was not very keen on keeping them. The younger boy was in tears as his mum said she would give them away and, since he was always spending time with Montu, he wanted a dog of his own. I gave him an option that I would keep the dogs but he could come and feed them whenever I am not around.
So there, that's how I got Simba and Pumbaa. Then most of the time, more dogs followed Montu home just to be fed and then left. I almost knew most of the dogs from my area and later learned their names as the owners told me so after seeing Montu with me.... funny how I was known as Montu's owner rather than Montu as my dog... lol even my home address was known as Montu's place.
The majority of the dogs wagged their tails if they used to see me in their area and came running for a nice hug... it seemed like they were all my best friends because of Montu.
After I got 3 more dogs, I told Montu no more, but after years came. One small, gorgeous, little fluffy white female dog at my
doorstep out of no where. In reality, they were all hiding in flowers because as soon as I picked her up and said okay Sweetie, where did you come from... all four of them came running out and started jumping up and down... we went around looking for the owner but no one owned up, so I ended up with 5 dogs.... Montu, Brownie, Simba, Pumbaa, and Sweetie.
Those years were the best years of my life, spending time with my 5 dogs, who were all alive for at least 15 years. I met so many people and made friends because of my Montu and 4 others.
