Lady Freya the Beloved

The exciting new life of a stray cat

By Ellie HristovPublished 5 years ago 4 min read

When something life-changing is about to happen, you get to feel it before it actually happens. A weird sense in your bones that something or someone is coming your way to leave you completely transformed.

That is exactly what happened to me. On 30th of July 2016. A day, I believe, was faded. A day that feels like it was yesterday. A day, when my eyes were opened to the beauty and unconditional love a kitty carries inside itself.

This is the story of Lady Freya the Beloved.

A cat with an extraordinary life full of adventures and I like to believe - life full of luck. Luck to be adopted and grow in my family.

Freya is a female stray kitty with unbelievably kind little heart. By the time me and my husband ran into her one summer night, she must have been 3 or 4 months old. Kicked out on the street by her "lovely and caring" ex family, Freya, like every other unfortunate kitty, was roaming the city hungry and alone. Not knowing if she would find anything to eat. Not being sure if she will find a place to sleep. Not thinking she might live to see another day.

Bad enough, my hometown is probably one of the worst places to be a stray cat at. Drivers are crazy. Street dogs are aggressive. And the pet shelters are showing zero interest in taking proper care of animals. I don't even understand why the heck are they calling themselves "pet shelters"...

Lady Freya was just another kitty, roaming on the streets. Another part of the statistics, another unwanted pet. A reject. Until she met us. Or, to be more precise - until WE met HER. My husband and I were enjoying the warm summer wind around 11:20pm walking down a random road. We were talking about how we should go to the local shelter on the next day and adopt a kitty. We've always known that a cat is the only missing part to complete our lives. I have gotten my first kitty-cat on my 3rd birthday. This is the best gift I've ever been handed. My little fur friend lived to see 18 years of age and died peacefully in her sleep. I was devastated. Heartbroken is the least to say, about how I felt. My childhood, my memories, everything died right there and then with her, in September 2014. And the pain caused by that brutal loss continued to haunt me to 30th of July 2016. The night of that meant-to-be walk.

As me and my partner were walking and talking about adopting a pet the next morning, something ran across the street. We barely saw anything clear, but we were damn sure we DID see something. We knew it wasn't a child at that time of night. It wasn't a dog, too, because it was way too small. Then what was it?

We stood still for a few minutes, trying our best to hear something that could give us a clue of what was going on. And...Nothing. Nothing happened. No sound, no site. We continued walking again. Then in a few seconds, that same little thing, ran across the street again and this time it stood in one place. Right in front of us. It was her. The three-colour, fluffy, scared and adorably sweet Freya... She had no name. No collar. No family tree. No breed. No identity. My husband and I froze in silence. What we were longing for was magically thrown in our hands. We just looked at each other and made the decision that changed our lives forever. I walked slowly to the kitty, kneeled down in front of her and tried to pet her. In that very second she started purring like she had known me for ages. She sat down quietly and let me touch her. I can recall the feeling to that day. The feeling of finding a beautiful soul...

With absolutely no hesitation I grabbed the cat and said to my husband that we are taking her home right away. He couldn't agree more.

I named the kitty Freya - goddess of family and love. A name that fits her so perfectly. Our pet got involved in our life routine very quickly, like she had been with us for years. Her fun, sweet and outgoing personality made us fall in love with her instantly. Few years passed since our first meet and Freya became inseparable part of mine and my husband's life. In May 2017 our home welcomed a new member - our son Yanis. A healthy and playful baby boy that lights up and brings sense to our existence. We decided to move abroad and particularly in the United Kingdom.

After a long and complex procedure we managed to take Freya with us. We sorted out her passport, her vaccines, her way of transportation, her ticket, everything. Not for a second did we consider leaving her in our old house in our hometown. Freya is just a cat to the world, but for us, Freya is part of the family. A stray girl with no secure future, bloomed into a beautiful and healthy indoor cat.

At current times, Freya and our family are residing in Enniskillen area, UK. In a spacious two-floor house in the countryside where the song of the birds and the cool fresh air are making days even more beautiful. I am thankful to fate, or God or, you name it...That this kitty walked into my life. She changed me so much and erased all the bitterness and tears from the past loss. My pet has shown me exceptional level of love that I'm not sure a human being is capable of.

Freya is madly in love with her human baby brother, they're spending their time playing and cuddling together. She loves our garden and doesn't skip a chance to play and run outside in the yard. I have never felt so complete and loved.

This is the real life story of Lady Freya the Beloved. An angel living in the body of an animal.

If you would want to experience that happiness and see how home really feels like - adopt. Don't buy. Give a chance. Don't trade.
