Kovu The Great
Or how I became a legend in my own mind

I am a large, black Norwegian Forest Cat. My name is Kovu The Great, My hoomans just call me Kovu. And I am a bully.
I had a rough start in life. When I was found outside I was malnourished and had a serious respiratory condition. I was so sick I almost died, so my sweet mama spoiled me endlessly. I was so spoiled that I could do no wrong, even when I picked on my poor sister Tootsie. Tootsie was cute and small and had no tail. I couldn’t stand it when she got attention. So I bullied her. And I never got punished.
I was so happy. Even though I had to live in 2 small rooms in a trailer, my mama loved me so much, I was the boss of everyone, no matter what I did. Until my sweet mama went off to college. That’s when we went to live with my new mama and I got to go outside for the first time. Wow. Outside was new because I didn’t remember it at all.
At first I had to stay inside and watch my siblings outside through the window. My mama was worried I might get lost outside so she waited a while before she let me go out on the deck in the back yard. I loved that. I could lay in the sun and chase the birds that flew by. I couldn’t catch them but it was so fun!
I was still a bully but I loved my new siblings and my new adventures. I also got the be the boss of my new mamas office. She had an office downtown too but, a lot of the time she worked with me at home. I am the king of paper and bubble wrap after all. What would she do without me? I spent a lot of my time walking across my mamas keyboard and pushing papers off the desk so I could lay on them and chew the edges.
I think it’s very important to leave a Kovu watermark/tooth mark on every piece of paper. If one falls on the floor, I pounce on it, possess it, and chew the edges. Especially the yellow ones. Yellow paper is delicious. So is plastic! I adore plastic. Grocery bags, packing wrapper, bubble wrap, chewing plastic is almost as good as yellow paper.
One day I was sitting in a box in the living room, chewing on the plastic bubble wrap insulation, and I saw the open front door. I hadn’t ever been in the front yard, I thought I should investigate. So I slipped out into the front yard. Even bigger wow! There is a lot of uncharted territory out here. And here’s the extra fun part. At the end of our little dead end street there is a big section of trust land, all wild. Perfect place to play.
So I went to play, and chase mice and have a great time. I don’t know how long I was gone but I guess my mama and papa got really worried and put posters of my face all over the place and even called all the vets and shelters trying to find me. Of course I didn’t know any of that. I was having the time if my life!
Then one day, I was playing at the edge of the street and I saw my brother! That was great! He was playing in the yard and I went over to see him. We ran around a little bit then he jumped up to the top of the fence. I couldn’t jump that high, but I looked over and saw my front door. What a surprise! I ran up the steps and scratched at the door. Guess what? My mama was standing there. I was so happy to see her, she was happy too, she was crying happy.
I guess she was crying because she really needed me at the office and she was happy I was home. I don’t think she had been getting much work done while I was gone. There was no one there to shred the paper on the floor and jump in the shred bag to finish the job.
When I got upstairs to the office I jumped up in my mamas chair, and there was the yellow paper! I was back! I quickly knocked the yellow paper on the floor and chewed away. While I was rolling around on the paper my mom came in and sat at the desk. I jumped into her lap to get some snuggles and reach over to tap on the keyboard. I think she missed me. She even left a whole bunch of paper in the shred bag for me. I was in heaven! Then she took my picture so she could show everyone how great I am. I love my mama. I’m so glad to be home to be the boss again.
