Is Your Dog Ready for Winter? 5 Tips to Prepare
Get your furry friends ready for cold winter!

Dogs in cold climates often have an advantage when it comes to staying warm during the winter, but even dogs that have always lived indoors can benefit from the right preparations before winter arrives. That’s why we put together this list of five ways to prepare your dog for the cold winter months!
#1: A Warm House

One of the most important tips is to make sure your dog has a warm house. If you have an outside dog, bring them in during the winter. Make sure their area is insulated and they have some warmth coming from a heat lamp or the stove. If your outside dog doesn't like being inside, find a well-insulated doghouse and put straw or hay on the floor so it's cozy. #2: A Snug Jacket: Dogs should wear a coat with a hood and booties over their paws when they go out to play in the snow.
#3: A Warm Drink: In addition to making sure your dog has plenty of fresh water all day long, give him a small amount of warm liquid such as chicken broth or meat soup each day.
#2: Proper Outfits

Dogs are naturally comfortable with temperatures under 80 degrees, but they can still get cold during the winter. Proper winter clothing is key! Some dogs will wear sweaters and raincoats when it’s really cold outside. Others may need a dog coat or sweater made from materials like fleece or polar fleece to stay warm on their back end.
#3: Comfortable Accessories

Some dogs need extra support in the wintertime because their fur coats don't keep them warm. If your dog spends a lot of time outside, they might not have natural protection from the wind, rain and snow. Fortunately, you can get cozy scarves, mittens and booties at your local pet store! When selecting accessories, make sure they're durable enough to withstand all types of weather and fit securely on your pup's paws. Finally, you may want to consider getting a new set of tags with your address on it in case your pup becomes lost during the cold months.
#4: Enrichment Activities

Your dog is home alone during the day and left outside at night. How can you help him pass the time? Give him interactive and challenging toys like a puzzle feeder, soft treat toy, or stuffed Kong. Offer high-value chew items like pig ears and cow hooves. Keep your backyard clean by picking up his poop regularly so he has an appropriate place to do his business. Make sure he doesn't have access to places that are too cold in the wintertime, such as unheated garages or porches. Check with your vet about whether it's safe for him to go outside in freezing temperatures if there's snow on the ground. Make sure his bedding is warm enough--this might be a great time to invest in some heated pet beds!
#5: Outdoor Activities

Consider signing up your dog for a new activity like agility, tracking, or flyball. If you plan to take your dog on regular walks or hikes, try bundling up beforehand and give him some time with the winter gear before you head out into the cold. How do you know if your dog is ready for winter?
-A well-trained and obedient pup will come when called.
-If you are getting outside more often during this season, consider signing up your pup for a new activity like agility, tracking, or flyball.
-Dogs who have just started spending more time outdoors should be gradually introduced to the colder weather by limiting their outdoor playtime in the beginning of winter until they adjust to it.
