We have a boxer named Hemi by the previous owner. He was going out of town with the oil field to a different state and could not take the dog with him. So, instead of allowing him to take the dog to the shelter my significant took the dog from him. I was surprised when my significant brought him home and I knew the dog did not deserve to go to a shelter but what did we need another animal for.
I was pregnant with my son at that time and he followed me everywhere and laid not at my feet but on my feet. My significant said she he is your dog he follows you around. I said no he is just following me because I am pregnant.
Of course I believe my signifant really was the one that wanted him as he spends most of his time playing and boxing with the dog. My son is three now and he is so attached to the dog. It is his puppy. I was a little distressed by my son when he realized that he could undo the snap and the dog could run with him. My son even crawls in his dog box with him. It is his puppy and it should not be tied up. We are trying to teach him he cannot ride his dog like it is a horse.
When my son was first learning to walk and running around when he was younger Hemi became like the Nanny dog off of Peter Pan. He followed the baby all around the yard and even hurded him when he was near something that might hurt him. It was the cutest thing in the world to see. He called him "Heam-me". It is his dog for better or worse. He is all the time trying to give him whatever food he is eating. I have to stop him from giving the dog a bit and then taking a bit himself.
Everyone that has seen Hemi loves him because he is so comical. He is the biggest ankle bitter you will ever see. He does not know you he goes for you ankles if he thinks you don't belong in the yard. He is also fiercely loyal and will not leave the fence.
Life would be a little less exciting without the boxer named Hemi. My son would not have a companion and would not have a happy childhood with tons of memories without Hemi. He is my sons rock always there and the one animal my son loves with all his heart. It is important for him as a child to learn how to properly care for an animal and how to express love for that animal. I feel that Hemi is a large enriching part of my son's life and reguardless of how much work helping my son take care of an animal takes will be loved for the entirety of his life and be a large part of our families as well.
I hope that as a reader of this story if you do not have a Hemi in your life, you want to go out to your local shelter and bring a Hemi home with you as well. For all the love you give to your animals you will get back in return. Your children will learn lessons about how to treat animals and other that would last a lifetime. If you do not want a dog then get a cat or whatever pet you prefer but please, get a pet they bring so much value and love into your life and I know you will not regret a single minute of your decision.
