Getting a Puppy

Ollie: My Pit bull puppy

By Julia CapellaPublished 6 years ago 3 min read

I have been wanting a puppy for the longest time now. I already have a dog. He's an off-white Maltese named Fudge. We got him from my mom's friend and apparently he had been browner in color when he was a puppy, so they named him Fudge, but as he grew older he started turning white. He grew up around all his siblings and his mom and another dog that the family has, but he has been living alone for two years now since we didn’t have any other dogs, so now he gets jealous if there are other dogs, especially boy dogs since he is not fixed. He’s not very playful and likes to just lay around. He’s also a small dog, I like bigger dogs, but I love Fudge and would never get rid of him. But getting another dog is a huge change for him.

Like a week ago, a dog and her puppies were found on the side of a highway in a town over from mine and one of my friends posted on his story that they needed a good home, so I told him I would take one if there was a girl. To my luck, there was a girl, the only girl in the litter, so I told him I wanted her. The next day, he took me to get her and I brought her home without even asking my parents. When I got home, my mom looked at me like 'why do you have a puppy in your arms.' She kept telling me that we couldn't keep her, but ended up telling me to ask my dad. My dad at first didn't want to let me keep her because she is a Pit Bull. However, I convinced him by telling him that I would take care of her and pay for all her things.

Now the hard part, taking care of Ollie (@gollieeolliee on insta). The first night she woke me up at 4:45 AM and kept me up until around 10 in the morning. Then the second night she woke me up at 4:30, but thankfully went back to sleep around 7. Now, she tends to wake up around 6:30. I take her outside, and she goes back to sleep after playing with her toys for a little. She's super sweet and loves playing, which Fudge does not, so he tends to get annoyed with her. He also hates it when she barks at him and that causes him to get mad, so then I have to separate them. Slowly, but surely, Fudge is getting used to having Ollie around, and soon enough, he’ll love her.

Ollie does not realize that her bites can hurt a lot since she did not get to learn about puppy bite inhibition because of the fact that she has been separated from her mother and litter-mates so soon, so she tends to bite hard and if you push her away or tell her stop, she just comes running back to continue biting you. She does not care if you give her a toy to chew on, she will still try to bite you.

Even though Ollie will not let me sleep, bites me hard, and is annoying, I am still excited to be on this journey with her. I will have a lot of people stereotyping her for being a pitbull, but I am ready to prove these people wrong and show them that pitbulls are actually really sweet, loving, and loyal, not vicious, mean, and attacking anyone.

Thank you for reading and I hope you enjoyed it!
