In 1917 the AKC changed its breed in England to the Shepherd Dog because of the stigma attached to all Germans, and the breed was renamed the Alsatian Wolfhound. He immediately changed his birth name from German Shepherd to German Shepherd in Great Britain and changed it to Alsatian dog or wolf to distinguish the dog from its unpopular German roots.
