Don't Talk Bad About Cats Around Me

Keep your gossip to a whisper

What happens when a devoted cat lover hears someone speak unkindly about their most cherished creatures in the world?

Sure you like dolphins and dogs, may even adore Gizmo from Gremlins. But cats are supreme and prioritized in life.

While enjoying a spicy chai tea latte I overheard a group of people chatting about animals. They were dog lovers, no doubt, and got on the subject of CATS. My ears perked, taking in their conversation. One person spoke negative about cats, commenting on their uselessness with this inability to show love — an unworthy animal to have. He chuckled, questioning their purpose.

“You might as well get a bird, how can a cat bring joy to your life?”

I thought how DARE he speak of cats in such a dismissive way?! Unbeknownst to him, a cat lover sat, tables away.

His words were triggering; I was completely astonished by the stereotypes and inaccuracies. How can a cat bring joy to your life, you ask?! Hmm there are many ways; I can think of 5 right off the bat!

1. A loyal companion with treasured independence

2. They are intriguing; it is interesting to observe how they interact with the world

3. Quality company, relaxing sound effects included … PURR

4. Adorable expressions of love: head bunts, eye blinks, walk by rubs with a curled tail that wraps around your legs, sweet vocalizations expressing their emotions

5. Watching them in pure contentment; a meditative state

Thoughts swirled in my mind. Do I speak up to a person that isn’t even talking to me? Not doing so felt like a betrayal. But, this icky feeling comes over you when others speak of your loved one in a cruel way. Sitting there listening you appear to agree. I turned to them; a smirk on my face with a semi-serious edge.

“HEY, no talking bad about cats around me.”

I continued by sharing my adoration for cats and how they are great pets to have. Now, my approach could have gone several ways depending on the maturity level of those confronted. Although a slight seriousness in my tone, my communication was lighthearted and friendly.

They listened but didn’t say much and immediately stopped talking about animals. Time went on, their conversation gave way to goodbyes then one by one departed the coffee shop. Was the cat belittler open to learning something new? I’ll never know.

Regardless, I was loyal to my love of cats; thus true to myself. After all, your real peeps are the ones that have your back. They feel disturbed when others speak nasty about you, with no room for disrespect. It is easy to make assumptions with limited information; make sure you know what you are talking about.

Yet, certain conversations are a waste of energy, especially for an introvert like me. It’s an intuitive thing; following your guidance is key. Many people won’t hear you no matter what you speak.

There are domestic felines who prefer not to be touched who hiss and hide upon approach. Typically you must earn the love of a cat and I respect that.

Might as well get a bird huh? Not necessary, a cat will do — although birds are sweet too. It’s partly lifestyle for me, do what works best for you.

Yes, we have our preferences and your mouth is yours to say what you will BUT keep your cat gossip to a whisper. There might be a cat lover around who must chime in with their opinion; even if you don’t want to hear it. You’ve been warned.
