A Very Special Meeting

Meeting my first puppy

By Jill SmithPublished 3 years ago Updated 3 years ago 6 min read

Warmth. It’s all I have ever known. My mother and littermates always kept me warm.

“What!? What’s this cold?”

All of a sudden I was alone.

“What is touching me and why?” I wondered.

I am only two weeks old and the world is too bright to open my eyes. All I know is I am away from the warmth of my mother, brothers and sisters. I have no clue what is happening. Suddenly, I am put down on a warm blanket and fall into a deep sleep. Sleeping is what I do the majority of the time because I am just learning about the world, and it’s exhausting. I think I like being a puppy. I wake up next to my mother who was ready to feed me delicious milk.

The time went by. My littermates and I are continuing to get bigger. Feeding times are busy as we grow. We all want Mom’s milk and are willing to fight each other for it.

The time flew by and I am four weeks old. I loved to play with my littermates and am starting to do more than just eating and sleeping. I am seeing, hearing and smelling all sorts of different things. The world is my oyster and must be explored. I also learned there are big humans and little humans. The little humans love to take turns carrying me around, putting me in a little toy shopping cart, running around the house yelling vroom. My littermates and I are also learning tug and how to play.

“Why am I up in the air again? Put me down, big human! I want to play, and smell all the new smells!”

Soon enough I return to my brothers and sisters, and sleep soundly.

“Is Mom mad at me?” I think sadly.

Mom has started guiding us towards kibble and not the sweet milk that I am used to. I am going to follow her and just try to latch on. It didn’t work. She growls at me and steers me towards the kibble.

Here I am. I’m five weeks old.

“Why am I up in the air again. I want to play!”

I see my brothers and sisters playing. I don’t want to be up here. We are outside, and my nose is going crazy. I explore these long green things on the ground. It kind of helps scratch an itch and feels good if you roll in it just right. There is this soft dark stuff that if I put my paws in it and move them real fast, it flies everywhere. The best part about this is if you do it long enough the stuff underneath it is cooler than on top and it feels great to lay down on a warm day. Puppy life is great. I love to play, explore and just be a puppy.

The days go by, and I am still getting bigger. I am learning and playing with the tiny humans. One day, one of the big humans scooped me in his arms. I watched six of my brothers and sisters, and three of the tiny humans run to the screen door. The big human took me out the screen door, while the tiny humans and my brothers and sisters wonder where I am going. I just relax in the arms of the big human. Everything had been great until now, I am sure it will be somewhere great.

“What happens next?”

I am passing along the rest of this story to my human, so sit back and enjoy my adventure to my furever home.

The day is here. I am showered, dressed, and you could not wipe the smile from my face. I am meeting my very first puppy today. Due to busy schedules in my childhood home, a dog was never an option because the dog would have been alone too much. It wasn’t for my lack of begging or trying. I even wrote a note about how I would be such a great dog mom. Finally, I am in a place where I can provide a home a dog would deserve where he won’t be lonely and will have lots of playtime and love.

The breeder had sent us pictures as the puppy grew. We had been preparing by buying all of the stuff a puppy may need or want. We know this dog will be spoiled rotten. Being Disney lovers, we knew we wanted a Disney name. After going through the common Disney names, we decided on Cap after Captain America. Today, he is known as Cap, the Captain, Captain and Captain Rogers.

We eat breakfast and drive to the breeder’s home. The breeder knew what time we were arriving. We arrive at the breeder’s house and he walks out with the most adorable puppy I have ever seen.

“Hi sweet boy!” I exclaim.

In response, he wags his tail and licks my face.

We exchange goodbyes with the breeder, and get back in the car. It is a seven hour drive home but we know it will take longer with frequent stops for the puppy.

“Can I hold him just for a minute before we start driving?” My husband Keith, asks.

I hand him to my husband. We spend at least ten minutes exclaiming how cute he is and how excited we are to have him. We barely make it back to the main road and Cap is asleep on my chest. We drive and talk while Cap sleeps. After two hours we decide to stop at a small park by a lake to get out of the car and let Cap out. We are being very careful due to having a very young unvaccinated puppy.

We look around for anything that may hurt Cap and the area looks safe. We slip on his personalized collar, put him on a leash and let him walk to a little gazebo nearby. We give him his first toy, a squeaking toy duck. He takes it and prances around like he has won first prize in a contest.

“Do you think he will eat?”

“There’s only one way to find out.” Keith replied.

I pull out a bowl and dump some of the kibble we had brought with us in it. As soon as it is on the ground he pounces on it and eats nearly the whole bowl. He eats every last bite, lays down and goes to sleep.

We decide since he was sleeping that it was time to get back on the road. I pick Cap up and carry him to the car. We laid a sheet on the floor under me on the passenger side of the car and let him sleep down there. An hour or so later, it is time to stop for some lunch..

We pull in the drive through at a fast food restaurant, and order. Cap doesn’t stir. As soon as we pay and we have our food, I look down and see a little face grinning at me. Cap is awake.

His grin says “What is that wonderful smell? Can I have some?”

“Sorry Bud.” I tell him. “You are not getting human food within four hours of having you.”

Cap’s nose is going a mile a minute smelling the food. After we are done eating he lays back down and goes back to sleep. For the rest of the drive, he naps and occasionally wakes up, looks around, makes sure everything is safe and goes back to sleep.

We arrive home. I want to let Cap walk inside on his own. I put him on the ground, and he starts to whimper. I wasn’t sure if it was the long day or it was the dark. It was the first time he had cried all day. I pick him up and he stops crying. I carry him into the house. We walk him out back, let him do his business and bring him to bed with us where we all sleep soundly. Cap is home and I am his human.

We can’t wait to have more adventures together and I spend everyday trying to make sure he has the best puppy life ever.
