A Boy and His Dog

The adventures of Rosie Roo

By John KnowlesPublished 4 years ago 3 min read

The year was 2015. I had just moved into a house with my new wife and our 2 boys. I was just starting to come into my own in the career I had built, and I decided I wanted a dog of my own choosing. It was something I had missed my entire life. So I searched online for weeks. One day I came across an ad from a couple looking to rehome their American Bulldog. There were no pictures but I was intrigued. I drove to the family's home to meet their dog.

Upon arriving, I knocked on the door and this mass of white fur jumped at the door and all I could do was smile. She wasn't being aggressiv just nosey. The mother of the house came to the door, her name was Adrianna. She smiled as she opened the door to come in and sur enough their dog bolted like a shy child into another room.

During the course of the conversation the dog, who I came to learn was named rosie, would come intothe room to investigate then scamper off whenever I would try to engage her. I laughed everytime, which caused Rosie to turn and look at me from the allway as if to say, "Do you really like me?"

After an hour of watching he children smack the dog on a whim, or just throwing things at her Rosie, it seemed, had had enough and walked over to me with her head down. I put my hand gently to the side of her face and calmly told her she was a beautiful girl. I began speaking to her as if she understood, asking if she'd like to come home and live with me. Every question was met with her paws tapping the ground with excitement.

FSinally, there came the moement when I knew Rosie would be my best friend. Shw walked up to me and buried her head and face into my shoulder as if to hug me. I hugged her deep with such love. I looked at Adrianna and said, "I believe Rosie has made her choice. "

Adrianna smiled, "I believe you are corrrect."

It was then I knew our adventures had just begun. A boy and his dog. I took her leash and walked her to the car and I patted he gently on her head and smiled wide. She had no qualms jumping right in, claiming her spot. As I got into the drivers seat she peeked up through the middle console as if smiling and thanking me for rescuing her from those mischievious children.

We drove home, those words had new meaning for me. I had found a new house, but for once I had the choice of any dog and here I was, the chosen myself. I pulled up to the house and walked Rosie up the front steps to meet the family. The boys were excited and Rosie bounced around her new home like the child I saw her as earlier.

I walked outside with her and she bolted into the yard, barking as if yelling for joy at her new home. she bounced around like a whie puffy version of Tigger from Winnie the Pooh. There I stood, her newfound Christopher Robin, all smiles and joy. I decided to go to the local pet store for treats and toys and promptly left to do so.

After an hour i returned home and to my surprise Rosie was sitting by the door like a young lady waiting for her father to return from work. My oldest son looked at me and laughed, "As soon as you left she sat by that door and wouldn't move until jut now when you came home."

I could only smile as iI opened the bag of toys and treats for her. It was like spoiling a daughter. I was home, and Rosie would forever be the best friend I ever found,
