Why am I always tired, but nothing to gain?

How to work and live efficiently

By Jeffrey C AllenPublished 3 years ago 5 min read

When night falls, walking in the city streets, you will always see rows of office buildings are still brightly lit; open Facebook in the morning surprised to find that there are still people taking photos of work at 3 am. Once upon a time, we advocate "nine to five", and now, hard work has become the standard in the workplace.

"Everyone else is fighting, so I have to fight too" - what exactly is the fight? Not everyone has a goal, then, it is easiest to do from the "study" and "overtime" to start.

People who always have no fixed time off work look hard and diligent, but not better than most people. On the contrary, the busier they are, the more tired they are, the more anxious they are, the more anxious they are, the busier they are, entering a deadly cycle ...... This diligence is also known as "poor diligence", which leads to two of the most intuitive results: little success and exhaustion.

How do be diligent to the point?

1. Strengthen the target: "use to learn" is more important than "learn to use"

We all especially understand the importance of knowledge reserves, always afraid of "books to the use of time to hate less", so many people are reading books every day, learning English, enrolled in various training institutions, but also often stay up late to work overtime - all this looks very much in line with the busy image of modern people. However, when dealing with specific work, skills are still not enough, so once again into the "I am not reading and learning too little" self-doubt, spend more time working overtime, enroll in more training institutions, to bombard themselves with more intense learning.

Most people do not learn enough, but not enough focus. In the learning process, we often face a dilemma, that is, the learned knowledge is difficult to completely and long remember. In this regard, the "forgetting curve" proposed by German psychologist Ebbinghaus describes how the human brain forgets new things - forgetting is a very normal state, forgetting starts immediately after learning, the process of forgetting is not uniform, and its speed from fast The process of forgetting is not uniform, it is fast to slow.

"Learning to apply" and "using to learn" are not in conflict with each other and can be used together, but we often overlook the role of the latter. "Use to learn" means to learn with a specific task-oriented and precise goal. Through a period, focus on the effective mastery of a field of expertise, and can be quickly applied, forming a virtuous cycle of "input to output and then to results.

2. Use the "tomato work method" to strengthen the training process: focus your efforts and be on point

In the 1990s, there was a famous experiment that tried to find out the reason why "elite players are better than intermediate players" through a large amount of data. To do this, three psychologists went to the University of the Arts in the heart of West Berlin to study a group of famous violinists.

The subjects were divided into two groups: elite players and enthusiasts, and over some time, it was found that the average player's work time was spread out, with the total amount of work time and the total amount of leisure time is similar, while the elite players had two significant work peaks, in the morning and the afternoon, and outside of work, they had more time to rest and relax than the average player.

The conclusion is that long, scattered hours of hard work can easily lead to ineffective work, while rhythmic and focused hard work is more likely to produce results. "Hard work" is different from "hard work", and only those who know how to control their time and focus will improve their skills faster.

The "tomato work method" created by Francisco Cirillo in 1992 is a simple and easy-to-use time division method: choose a task to be completed, set the tomato time to 25 minutes, and in this tomato time, focus on work. Do not allow anything unrelated to the task until the tomato clock rings, draw an x on the paper for a short break, and take more breaks every four tomato periods. The tomato work method not only greatly improves productivity, but also brings an unexpected sense of accomplishment.

Efficient people are good at dividing time, focusing on work during peak hours, rather than spreading the task to all the time to work hard.

3. "Brain bandwidth" is not enough, but want too much, need to have to give to get

At the same time dealing with several things does not mean the ability to excel. In this regard, Harvard experts have proposed the concept of mental bandwidth.

Simply put, mental bandwidth is like a road. If your road has only three lanes, and you want it to pass seven cars at the same time, it is not realistic. Brain bandwidth determines our "mental capacity" to handle multiple things at the same time. We often see a lot of big people with full schedules, but still full of energy, that is their bandwidth is enough; we will say "for a certain matter of the heart but not enough" is not enough bandwidth.

An overly busy person will have many urgent tasks and deadlines at hand, lack the "bandwidth" to think about longer-term development, and cognition and judgment will decline across the board. In this regard, Harvard University's tenured professor Murray Nathan published the results of a study: too busy or too poor in the long term, will make people stupid. And the author of the book "Poor and Busy", American author David Shipler also clearly said: that the loss of self-control over time will fall to real poverty, because, this will trigger more panic psychological cues, and self-loathing.

Nathan's research found that the reason for the failure to complete tasks is not a lack of time, but a lack of mental energy to deal with the problem, because the time is too fragmented, and too many tasks, but will increase anxiety due to distractions, resulting in more inability to focus on the main task, increasing procrastination.

The solution is to reduce task distractions, seek outside help, and divide the problem so that the anxiety of dealing with it can be diluted.

Therefore, in the premise of "mental bandwidth" is not enough, you need to do task cleaning, pick out the important tasks, and reduce the distracting tasks, there is a give and take.

Focus.

To learn by using means to learn with specific tasks as the guide, with precise objectives. Through a period, focus on effectively mastering a field of expertise, and be able to quickly apply, forming a virtuous cycle of "input to output to results".

Long-term, scattered diligence can easily fall into ineffective work; while rhythmic and focused diligence is more likely to produce results. "Hard work" is different from "hard work", and only those who know how to control time and focus will improve their skills faster.
