When the most ordinary tool becomes the most powerful: your favorite song

An unusual guided walking meditation you might have done accidentally already

This guided meditation is something I have done unconsciously for years and has become the most powerful way to feel the feelings I most times either do not want to feel, cannot express or even begin to understand.

For this we are using the number one tool available to us that might seem so ordinary yet in all meditation and mindfulness tools I have ever used it has shown up to be the most immediate and most powerful way to understand what is going on inside your heart, mind and soul.

You can either choose specific songs to make you feel a certain way and take charge of your emotions and how you want to feel or you can let music be a little helper to let you understand better what is going on in your little world and untangle the mess that might have formed during the day, week or even longer.

For the first version think of a song that makes you feel like an absolute badass? Like nobody can cross you, like damnnnn, better get out of my way, that‘s right, yes, you see me, yes, take another look, honey!

Do you have a song like that? When you need to feel this way walk around your neighbourhood fully immersed into that song and every song like it to feel what it feels to embody that confidence, that essence, that feeling of attractiveness, worthiness and badassery yourself.

Really feel into the person that you are with this attitude. Visualize yourself living the lifestyle you want for yourself when you are listening to this song whilst you are walking through the city, along the beach or on the way to the supermarket. Walk like the person singing that song would walk, move with the confidence this song is offering to you. You can do it outwardly of course (I surely catch myself having a dance and or twerk-party on the streets) but you can absoultely play it out in your mind. Your imagination can run free, your feelings will follow, your mind will follow.

Like this you are making this feeling available to you at all times by simply playing this song. This song will act as a trigger for your brain to evoke this feeling. Nothing on this earth will get you closer to a feeling as fast as music can. So, here you go, badassary with a click on your phone.

In the same way, I use songs to deal with stress, overwhelm and anxiety. The beauty of music is that it is art put into a couple of minutes that reaches your heart and your soul. Art is meant to express what we fail to express with rational thinking and words. Art allows us to be real, to be authentic. Use songs that make you understand feelings to really truly feel them when you are going for a walk. Walk slowly. Take a second to look around, look at the sky. Be with yourself and the music. Let these artists help you understand yourself. Let these artists help you feel the messy emotions we feel day to day. Let these artists help you let out the tears you have been holding back. Let them use their voices, their gifts-that is why we need artists. Let them save your soul in moments you feel lost. Let them show you that there is a song out there that will make you feel less alone. Walk with them. Walk with your favorite artists. Walk out your feelings, let your emotions flow through the movement of your body.

This mindfulness practice has quite literally saved me from emotional breakdowns more times than I can count. Especially if you are someone that has a hard time focusing and quiet meditation where you sit down makes you feel irritated or sometimes gives you even more anxiety than it calms you down, this is going to be an amazing mindfulness practice. Your body is engaged, you have several things to focus on, yet you are absolutely immersed in the emotion you choose to feel. Not everyone can easily sit down and meditate. Some of us have racing thoughts, some of us want to get away from our thoughts and the mere thought of being silently with them can prevent you from being mindful with them at all.

This way YOU are in control. You choose the songs that feel good to you. You choose however you want to move. You choose what roads you want to walk on. You choose. And that is the beauty of fully immersing yourself into songs whilst taking a walk.
