We Need to Value Other’s Opinion
Are we always right?
In nice early noon suddenly you got a call from your child’s school and heard that your little boy has gotten into a fight with another boy then there was an accident. So you rushed to the school, found your boy with a bandage in his head. You also met with the neighbor’s mom who was constantly staring at you with viciousness whose kid was also injured with a broken hand.
After that day, while taking out the garbage you faced her and now you have gotten into a fight. Slow down, guys! It was a verbal battle!! You found yourself arguing with that woman over who was beaten by whom. Since you perfectly raised your son that no way your kid can start these things with someone. You always thought that the boy whose family moved here last year has a suspicious vibe from day one. He surely was the one who picks the fight with you poor little kid. You believe, as that woman is in a corporate job, she hardly has the time to teach proper manners to his child. Also, there was an incident a couple of years ago where your child was beaten by another neighbor kid so you thought my silly boy is always a victim of such misdemeanor.
You are in an important meeting, suddenly you had a call from your kid’s school. Your little kid got injured by fighting with some classmates. Discipline and regulation are your first name and you implement them sincerely through the members of your family. No way your kid can mess up things with another kid. Must be the other one who was at fault. You became aware of that the mother of that child is a housewife, probably too much affection spoiled that child. Also, you heard of some occurrences that happened with that kid a couple of years ago, so something must have been wrong with that kid. Your disciplined child could not be the culprit there.
So which side you are on? The housewife or the service holder? You ought to have a side, don’t you? Both of them have their perception about that event and judging from the information given to the reader anyone can be correct. But they both can not be correct!!
This is the classic reason for all the disagreement in the world. Everyone in the universe judge every circumstance through their perspectives. Most of the people act through moral codes. People know about what is right and what is wrong. So why on earth there is so much fight? Because people tend to have their versions of morality. They have their standards of good or bad.
One day at office one of your colleagues was bragging about how his newly purchased iPhone got stolen. Everybody in the office including you can easily conclude it is wrong to steal. You feel very sorry for him. What if you become aware that he picked up some money from the park near the office and bought that iPhone? Would you feel sad for him? Some of you think it is a social justice that the phone was stolen from him. This is totally OKAY! This is your version of moral code.
Your colleague thinks this is unfair, this is very wrong to steal from him. He is destined to get that money from that park. It is his luck to have that money. This is just God’s blessings. This is just his version of moral code.
Besides the moral code, every story has a truth behind it. If we consider the first story both the women can not be correct. Although both of them have their version of moral codes or own versions of their storylines, either one of them is correct or some other phenomenon escalated the fight between the kids. So they both can be wrong. That means there is some constant truth behind the distinct versions of truths.
Even truth has variability based on geography. Some of you already know about writer Carrie Poppy and his famous incident with a ghost. Returning from a book store once she felt some demonic presence with her. When she was finally home she heard some whoosh! whoosh! sound and it was very dreadful for her. She began to feel pressure on his chest and started to see something unnatural. It became very regular to hear and she felt actual physical pain. After some time she found out some skeptic ghost hunters through google and told them her condition. Someone from them told her if she knew about carbon monoxide poisoning. So she searched about it and came to know about the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning includes pressure in the chest, auditory hallucinations. So she called some guy to check if there is a gas leak in his house. They checked and told her if she is late to call them she can be dead because of the high level of poisoning. Assume the same thing happened with someone from a remote place of southeast Asia and he died from that. Everyone would believe some paranormal affairs are the reason for that incident. The limitations in their reasoning are not their fault. You can not expect the same standards you are inclined towards. So the truth differs by variables.
And then there are choices. You like black T-shirts, Sushi, rainy season and your brother like blue shirts, hate sushi and love winter. Both of you are saying truth if tested in a lie detector. But you differ. Personal choices make complexity for achieving the constant truth and it adds different values to your moral code. So how do you deal with all the different versions of truths, moral codes or choices?
We evolved in a way that we must possess a certain amount of respect for the people and society. People can have bad choices according to you, they can have lousy moral codes. Even Society can have poor ethics. If you make a mockery of someone’s belief you are being disrespectful to that person. You don’t have to give a damn about his poor choice or wrong opinion. You need not express that every time. Find a common ground to talk to. You both believe in science but your friend believes in religion and you don’t. Then the common ground can be science. Make a civilized debate out of it. Be flexible with your opinion because you can always be wrong. Be open to the opposite and different ideas. Try not to make statements, question things. And always make an effort to find the actual truth, research the hypothesis and make a decision out of them. There is so much fake information, poor choices and different versions of truths that you can easily be manipulated and make your version of the truth. The dreadful thing is that everything is now connected and easily accessible. So you need to go out and find the actual truth behind every story. To maintain social integrity not only respect the different opinions and beliefs is necessary but also systematically spreading the actual truth is also important.
