Two Sides of Fortune

A Very Costly Life Lesson

By Halina Piekarska (UltraBeauty Blog)Published 9 months ago 4 min read

The house is empty. The rooms, once filled with laughter and light, are now immersed in an oppressive silence. The light filtering through the windows is pale, as if the day itself had lost the will to look at me. The slow footsteps draw near to the door. I hear them, I wait. I don’t have the courage to open. It’s the bank people. I recognize them by their voices. And no matter how much I try to ignore them, they know where I am. This house, which I once loved, is the last thing I have left. It’s the last thing I’ll be able to hold on to. I remember.

I remember... the day I won. The lottery. My heart was pounding like a drum, the realization that my life was going to change in an instant. Who would have thought? There were moments when I looked at the number on the ticket and couldn’t believe it. I was so sure of myself, so... powerful. Such a large sum that seemed like it would never run out. I never imagined that fortune could disappear so quickly. I thought it would be my salvation, that I would have everything I’d always wanted. And so it was. At first.

Luxury cars, homes all over the world. A villa by the sea, a penthouse in the city center. Luxuries I had never been able to afford. A chef preparing every meal for me. Housekeepers, luxurious mistresses. Designer clothes, reckless shopping. Restaurants, travels, a boat. It was easy, really easy. All it took was a credit card, and everything else followed. The world belonged to me, I thought. And if the money started running low, it didn’t matter. The game was always there. Every time the balance dropped, I pushed it back up. If I had won once, why wouldn’t I win again? With more money, the odds were on my side. I kept chasing fortune, again and again, but fortune betrayed me. I never learned, I never stopped believing that, in the end, one lucky shot would be enough.

And now? Now I find myself here, with a door banging against the wood. My house is being taken away. My life is ending. And I can hear them knocking, louder and louder. The silence of my failure surrounds me. I’m alone. No one’s looking for me, no one cares. Where are my friends? Where are the people who surrounded me when I had money? The truth is, I don’t see them anymore, I don’t hear from them anymore. Once the money was gone, they disappeared. The truth is, I didn’t care about them. I only cared about how they made me feel, about how they made me believe I had something others didn’t. But I never understood, I never saw. They were there for the money, not for me.

Regret overwhelms me. I look back and see only my stupidity. My hunger. My desperation. If I had never won, I would have never taken that risk. I should have never learned the hard way that money isn’t everything, that wealth isn’t just a matter of numbers. I wonder, now, if I had stopped, if I had thought about how to grow that fortune instead of spending it all so fast, would things have turned out differently? But it’s too late. Everything is too late.

The door opens. A man enters, one of the many from the bank. He doesn’t expect an answer, he doesn’t expect me to say anything. He looks at me, with a certain sadness in his eyes, but also a strange understanding. He approaches slowly, as if he wants to speak, but doesn’t know how to. Then, finally, he speaks: “Winning money isn’t difficult,” he says. “But making it grow, that’s a different matter. I’ve seen many like you, lose everything because they didn’t know how to manage it. If there’s one thing you can do now, it’s start over. Start from scratch. Learn to build financial literacy. It’s never too late to learn to make what you have work for you.”

His voice is calm, but his words strike like a sharp blow. In a corner of the room, the echo of my failure resonates, but a part of me knows he’s right.
