Thriving in the Face of Adversity

Overcoming challenges and determination

By AaradhyaPublished 3 years ago 3 min read

As I sat on the couch, staring at the blank TV screen in front of me, I couldn't help but feel lost. It was just another mundane day, going through the motions and not really feeling like I had a purpose. I had just graduated college and was now job hunting, but nothing seemed to be working out. I began to question if I had made the right choices in my life, if I was on the right path, and if I would ever find my place in the world.

Suddenly, my phone rang, breaking me out of my thoughts. I picked it up and saw that it was my childhood best friend, Chloe. We had grown apart over the years, but still kept in touch occasionally. I sighed and debated whether or not to answer. I wasn't in the mood for small talk, but I figured it couldn't hurt.

"Hey, Chloe," I answered, trying to sound upbeat.

"Hey, girl! How's it going?" she exclaimed.

I hesitated before answering, knowing she wouldn't want to hear my depressing outlook on life. "It's going alright, just trying to figure out my next steps."

Chloe knew me too well and could sense something was off. "What's going on? Talk to me."

I took a deep breath and began to spill my thoughts and feelings onto her. I told her about my job hunting struggles, my worries about my future, and my overall sense of unease. As I spoke, Chloe listened attentively and didn't interrupt me once. When I was finished, there was a pause before she spoke.

"I completely understand how you feel. I went through something similar after college. But you know what helped me? Volunteering."

I was taken aback by her suggestion. Volunteering? How would that help me with my problems?

Chloe picked up on my confusion and elaborated. "Yeah, it may seem like a small thing, but it can have a huge impact. When I started volunteering, I felt like I had a purpose again. I was able to give back to my community, make a difference in someone's life, and gain new experiences. It gave me a sense of fulfillment that I was missing before."

I listened intently to her words, trying to picture myself in her shoes. After some thought, I realized she had a point. Maybe volunteering would be the answer I was looking for. I thanked her for the suggestion and promised to look into it.

The next day, I decided to do just that. I reached out to a local community center and signed up to volunteer at their after-school program for underprivileged children. I was nervous at first, not having much experience with kids, but I wanted to give it a shot.

The first day was overwhelming. The kids were rowdy, loud, and full of energy. But as the days went by, I began to develop connections with them. They taught me about their lives, their struggles, and their dreams. I helped them with their homework, played games with them, and listened to their stories. It was a rewarding experience that I didn't expect to have.

As the weeks went by, I found myself looking forward to each volunteer session. It was something to look forward to during a time when I felt like I had no direction in my life. The kids didn't care about my job status or my future plans. They just wanted someone to play with and listen to them.

Eventually, one of the supervisors at the community center took notice of my dedication and offered me a job. It wasn't anything glamorous, just an administrative role, but it was a start. I wasn't expecting such a turn of events, but it felt good to have some sort of stability and purpose in my life.

Looking back on that phone call with Chloe, I realized just how much impact a small moment can have. Her suggestion of volunteering seemed insignificant at the time, but it ended up being a turning point for me. It helped me regain my sense of purpose and led me to the first step in my career. Most importantly, it taught me that sometimes it's the small things that can make the biggest difference.
