Three reasons why Money CAN buy you happiness

“Money can buy lots of things, but it can’t buy happiness.”

The best dog ever

Who hasn’t heard (or said) this at least once in their life? We are told that we should find things in our lives that fulfill us other than money, because money doesn’t buy happiness.

I disagree.

I think that it’s all a big conspiracy devised by bitter poor people to stop the rest of us bitter poor people feeling like we are missing out on something, and to stop us hoping for any more than we already have. Okay bit dramatic, but I don’t think it’s the truth.

Money can buy you happiness. Why? Because money makes life so.much.easier. It makes life’s everyday stresses no longer existent, allowing you to concentrate on those things that make you happy.

Three reasons why money can buy you happiness.

1. You can afford to go on more holidays.

Holiday = sunshine

sunshine = vitamin D

Vitamin D = happiness

The very scientific example above has been rigorously tested by me, and I can happily confirm that the results were unanimous. I was much happier lying on a sun lounger by the pool with a cocktail, than on my daily train commute to work, being sneezed over by the person opposite or slept on by the person next to me.

I think if I had the money to go on holiday whenever I wanted, I would be considerably happier than I am now. I would feel comfortable, cultured and content with a life well lived.

2. Without having to worry about money, you can do what you like with your life

You want to be the world’s first beat-boxing, break-dancing, bus driver? Or maybe you want to start a clothesline for crocodiles? (“Frocks for Crocs”, amiright?) Go for it! If it fails, who cares? Just try again with something else.

Most people have a job to pay the bills. Fact. If you’re lucky, you’ll enjoy what you do. Usually you’ll tolerate it because they can’t afford to give it up. Worst of all, you’ll absolutely loathe what they do but feel trapped because they can’t see a way out of the rat race. All in all: Totally miserable.

If you have money, you can afford to do whatever makes you happy. You can get whatever qualifications you need/want to in order to pursue your dreams. You can put your all into something without having to work 1 or more jobs to support yourself while you do it. If at the end of it, it doesn’t work out, that’s okay. No worries.

Having money opens so many more doors and allows people the space to work in a job they enjoy, rather than as a necessity simply to pay the bills. Plus – I think that people with money are taken more seriously than those without. You have an idea without the money to back it up? It’s a pipe dream. You have an idea with the money to back it up? You are an entrepreneur.

2.5 Money can buy you a dog and that basically happiness.

See said dog above. *Mic Drop*.

3. You can help those around you who you love and make their lives easier.

Finally, and most seriously, money helps you to help others which is the biggest benefit.

For most of us, helping others brings us happiness. The ability to make the lives of someone we love that little bit easier is a blessing that comes with having money. We all know that life can be hard at times. It throws you curve balls like Sandy Koufax (before you ask, no, I absolutely, definitely did not just google “world’s best curve ball thrower”.)

To conclude

Money does not stop life from happening or prevent the difficulties it throws our way. There will be times when life is hard, sometimes really hard, whether you have money or not.

However…

Money helps to make life easier the rest of the time. Not having to worry about money takes away the stress that the rest of us feel. There are a lot of problems that money can solve. Someone you love living in another country? No problem – you can hop on a plane and see them. Car breaks down? Pay to get it fixed.

If you don’t believe what I have said, in the words of Clare Boothe Luce: ““Money can't buy happiness, but it can make you awfully comfortable while you're being miserable.”
