This Simple Math Equation Is Your Secret Weapon For Success
A little math can make you wildly successful.
I sucked at Math from ages 6–11. I was more of a writer. At 12, I got an amazing teacher who changed my perspective on the subject. He’d constantly show us that Math is everywhere, and it’s crucial to how we live our lives. From there, I was hooked. Now, I don’t hesitate to show my 6-year-old daughter the power of Math, and she seems to be shaping up to be a lot better than I was at her age.
Equations are the biggest Mathematical concept that governs our lives. They are everywhere. You basically take two or more variables to get the desired result. Combine ingredients in the right measurements, and you get a cake. Do the right amount of exercises in the right order, and you get stronger. I can go on. You can even apply Math to increase the success you’re looking to achieve in your life. Different equations can get you there, but I’ve been thinking about this particular one lately:
(Knowledge + Network) * Accountability = Success
If you can increase the variables on the left of the equation, you’ll skyrocket the right side's result.
Level Up Your Knowledge
On a recent podcast, Mark Cuban revealed that he is into Artificial Intelligence (A.I). He sees A.I. as the future, and his investments are guided accordingly. He also knows that A.I. is complicated to do, and the companies that do it well — Netflix and Amazon, for example — are the ones he looks at for investments.
Above all, Cuban does not invest in anything he does not understand.
He spends hundreds of dollars each month and books and courses on A.I., taking a few hours out of his day to level up his knowledge.
This knowledge will allow him not only to leverage the technology for his own business but to invest in businesses that can make him millions in the future.
Your knowledge is directly tied to your success. This applies to all aspects of your life. If you invest in learning how to become a better lover, you’ll have a more fulfilling relationship. If you invest in your mental health, you’ll perform better under pressure, cope with stress more effectively, and become more productive. And of course, the more you learn, the more you earn. Becoming knowledgeable in your field of choice puts you near the top of the field. It won’t even take that long since most persons aren’t sharpening their skills. But as much money and time you can into improving your skills.
Build A Powerful Network
You can be the best in your field, but your skills go to waste if nobody knows who you are. The best way to use those skills is to help others, and you can do so through your network. Building your network means you can leverage it to increase your influence, income and to see changes in things you want. Here are some ways to start building your network:
- Start building your network by joining groups of like-minded people.
- Share your skills on social media. Help people who ask questions and connect with them offline.
- Reach out to some of the best in your niche and offer to help them for free.
- Pay to get into the right doors: A mastermind event can cost a bit up front, but it can pay off in multiples.
- Create your own group and encourage others to join.
- Join your local group, chamber, or community that are trying to achieve the things you’re trying to achieve
Focus on network quality as well as network quantity. Your network is the catalyst to success. By helping them, they will help you in return.
Multiply Your Accountability.
We can have all the skills in the world and a strong network, but if we’re not willing to put ourselves out there, we won’t see the success we want. The thing is, most of us are afraid to put our names on the line. If we fail, we take all the blame.
Success is a risk, and the risk is accountability. If we decide to create a business and share it with our network, our network expects us to deliver. If we go up for a promotion and need to lead others, we increase the risk of losing our jobs (the higher up you go, the easier it is to get fired). If we decide to get married, there’s a high cost of failure. Just ask Kim and Kanye. And the more we put ourselves out there, the more public our failure becomes. Steve Jobs getting fired from his own company comes to mind.
But it’s the only way to get real success. We need to put our names on the line and go big. The bigger we go, the higher the responsibility. However, the rewards will be greater. Think about your current field. How can you take on more responsibility? Think about your relationships. How can you step up to the plate? Just remember that accountability won’t work without improved skills and a strong network.
Final Thoughts
Success can happen in different ways, using different formulas. This one isn’t the only one or the right one. But it’s the one that can get you real results for a long time. Above all, it’s not going to be easy. It will take time and discipline to improve your skills and expand your network. And it will take commitment and failures as you expand your accountability. But as time goes on, you get more information to be better at all parts. And in the end, you’ll enjoy the journey through this simple formula.
