Welcome to the Tony Robbins podcast, where transformations start with understanding the core concepts of who we are and how we function. Today, we delve into one of the most significant topics affecting human behavior—identity. In this episode, we explore what identity means to us as individuals, how it shapes our decisions, and the powerful force it holds over our lives. If you're often puzzled about why change is so difficult to achieve or why certain behaviors seem ingrained, you’re in the right place. By the end of this discussion, you'll have a clearer sense of how your identity influences your actions and the potential for creating lasting change.

Identity can be described as the framework through which we define ourselves. It encompasses the beliefs, values, and experiences that inform who we are. Are you a goal-oriented person, or do you identify as someone who shies away from challenges? Do you consider yourself an athlete, an artist, or a caregiver? The myriad ways we define ourselves dictate how we relate to the world and interact with others.

Identity is not static; it’s dynamic and can adapt over time. However, one of the most steadfast aspects of our identity is the internal drive to remain consistent with how we see ourselves. This principle has been a guiding light in my work across 195 countries over 45 years, helping individuals from diverse backgrounds navigate their paths.

The Deep Connection Between Identity and Behavior

The human personality’s strongest force, without a doubt, is our need to stay consistent with our self-definition. This concept explains why someone who has identified themselves as a ‘procrastinator’ is likely to engage in procrastination repeatedly. Once you label yourself as something—whether it’s a ‘smoker’ or a ‘non-smoker’—that label shapes your behaviors. For instance, an ex-smoker will likely respond to an offer of a cigarette with a firm “No, I’m not a smoker,” versus contemplating what brand it is. This illustrates that their identity has shifted, and thus, their behavior follows suit.

Unfortunately, this powerful drive can also lead to negative self-definitions. For example, a person who often procrastinates may eventually adopt that as part of their identity—”I am a procrastinator”—which ultimately hinders their potential. When a belief like this is repeated often enough, it solidifies into fact for the individual, leading to a self-fulfilling prophecy.

As you consider your identity, think about the phrases you attach to “I am.” This is critical. Our language and emotional intensity play a pivotal role in shaping our beliefs. Whatever follows "I am" tends to manifest into our reality. We can create positive or negative identities based on what we affirm, and recognizing this influence is crucial for anyone seeking personal transformation.

The Impact of Social and Cultural Conditioning

The evolution of identity can be especially complex for women. Traditional gender roles often demand that women embody multiple identities simultaneously—such as caregiver, professional, and community member—all of which come with their own sets of societal expectations. This latitude can give rise to an overwhelming sense of identity crisis, as women may find themselves spread thin trying to meet all these roles.

Moreover, many individuals struggle with the pressure of unmet societal expectations, particularly regarding cultural or political identity. In the current climate, we see that how we define ourselves—often heavily influenced by outside judgments—can either empower or restrict us. As I watch these narratives unfold, there is a longing for individuals to shed the burdens of classification that lead to loneliness and division.

Consider how often we hear people declare, “That’s just not who I am,” when confronted with a new opportunity or challenge. This tight definition stifles growth. By examining our identities, we can begin to question our beliefs about who we are and consider relinquishing limiting labels. Think about when you last felt constrained by something you once defined yourself as—what limitations did that bring?

The Transformative Potential of Revising Identity

Today, let's invite a little curiosity. What identities have you clung to out of habit, or perhaps out of fear? It might be time for a reevaluation. Are there old identities that no longer serve you? What if you began to redefine who you are, perhaps broadening those existing labels or even removing them?

With this mindset, we can foster a more expansive view of ourselves. When we strip away preconceived identities, we open up to a fuller understanding of our potential. This is an exercise I implore you to undertake, whether you're seeking to enhance personal growth or to examine how you interact with others.

Life’s experiences often bring change in unforeseen ways. A metaphor I like to share involves the concept of a thermostat. Imagine setting your comfort zone at a temperature of 68 degrees. When your circumstance—financial, physical, or emotional—drops significantly, your internal drive kicks in, attempting to restore you to that space you’ve defined as comfortable. Conversely, if you encounter situations where you exceed your comfort zone—say, your financial status dramatically increases—there is often a reversion back to that original temperature as the subconscious tries to restore balance, often through self-sabotage.

This metaphor is poignant for understanding how identity functions. It’s not enough to simply recognize that change is possible; we must also adjust our internal thermostat to allow a warmer and more expansive identity. This internal adjustment can unlock the potential for greater achievements and deeper connections with the world around us.

Re-evaluating Beliefs and Beyond Labels

The discussion on identity and its ramifications often reveals a powerful truth: at a core level, people are not their behaviors. We’ve all made decisions that we later considered ‘dumb’ or not representative of who we are. Making mistakes is part of the human experience; it doesn't serve as a definitive measure of one's intelligence or worth.

So, how can we go beyond these beliefs? I want you to reflect deeply on moments that have redefined you throughout your life. Life lessons shape our identities in monumental ways, whether they lead us toward growth or impose limitations.

The exploration of identity is critical, especially during moments of transition or crisis. When we struggle with our sense of self, it’s an invitation to discover who we are beyond our current limitations. For many, this discovery takes form through spiritual revelations or life-altering experiences, such as traveling to different cultures, meeting diverse groups of people, or embracing the unconditional love of another.

Being able to witness individuals in different cultural settings—like when Mary and I traveled to Dubai and interacted with Muslim women—deepens one's understanding of humanity. Those encounters can shatter preconceived notions and prompt us to consider the richness that lies beyond surface identities. By connecting with others, we often discover reflections of ourselves, which can lead to profound insights about identity and shared humanity.

Conclusion: Cultivating a Broader Identity

To wrap up our exploration today, I encourage you to engage in self-inquiry: Who are you beyond the labels you've attached to yourself? What portions of your identity have you outgrown? Are you open to reimagining them? Remember that the expansive identity you are capable of is not only richer than you might currently acknowledge, it is also wonderfully liberating.

In this podcast series, we celebrate the beauty of the self—each person's unique essence and journey. With this conversation, we aim to uplift you towards recognizing that you are more than you might think. Take a moment to embrace curiosity about your own identity and consider the ways to broaden its boundaries.

Thank you for joining today’s discussion. Keep pondering these questions in your own life, and we look forward to continuing this conversation in the future.
