The Lantern Within.

Finding Light in a Materialistic World.

By Muhammad IlyasPublished 3 months ago 5 min read

The city was always alive—blinding neon signs, honking horns, phones buzzing, advertisements shouting from every corner. The streets were crowded, yet strangely, everyone seemed alone. People rushed as if chased by time itself, but when you looked into their eyes, there was weariness, not joy.

Among those rushing souls was Ayaan, a young man in his late twenties. His life revolved around the same repetitive cycle: wake up to the alarm, check his phone before even opening both eyes fully, rush through breakfast, run to the office, sit in front of a computer screen for hours, attend endless meetings, and then crawl back home exhausted.

The days blended into each other, and the nights offered no real rest. His body was tired, his health declining, his mind restless, and his spirit heavy. He often asked himself silently:

“Is this what life is supposed to be? Running, working, surviving—without truly living?”

The Lantern Shop

One evening, after a particularly draining day at work, Ayaan took a different route home. His eyes caught sight of a small, old shop squeezed between two tall modern buildings. The shop seemed almost hidden, yet something about it drew him closer.

Above the wooden door, a hand-painted sign read:

“Lanterns of Light.”

Curious, Ayaan stepped inside.

The shop was dimly lit, glowing softly with dozens of lanterns—some small and simple, others beautifully carved with delicate patterns. Each lantern seemed to carry its own warmth, unlike the cold fluorescent lights of the city outside.

Behind the counter stood an elderly woman. Her face was lined with age, but her eyes sparkled with serenity. She smiled as though she had been waiting for him.

“You sell lanterns?” Ayaan asked, glancing around. “But in today’s world, who really needs them? We have electricity, LED lights, technology…”

The woman chuckled softly.

“These lanterns aren’t just for light, my son. They are symbols. You see, every human being carries a lantern inside. Most people forget to light it, chasing after shadows instead. And when the inner lantern dims, no amount of artificial light outside can remove the darkness within.”

Ayaan frowned. “What do you mean by ‘inner lantern’?”

She leaned forward, speaking gently, as though sharing a secret.

“Your health, your peace, your joy—that is your lantern. When you nourish it, it shines. But people today run so fast after wealth, status, and possessions that they neglect their own light. And then they wonder why, despite all they own, they feel empty.”

Her words echoed inside him.

The First Step

That night, Ayaan lay awake, her words circling in his mind: “Every human being carries a lantern inside.”

The next morning, instead of immediately reaching for his phone, he sat up in silence. He closed his eyes and simply breathed. For the first time in years, he noticed the rhythm of his own breath—the rise and fall, the gift of being alive.

On his way to work, he chose to walk one extra block. He noticed the cool air against his skin, the sound of birds, the laughter of a child tugging at his mother’s hand. These little details had always been there, but he had been too busy to see them.

He drank water slowly instead of gulping it. He ate his lunch without scrolling on his phone, tasting every bite. He smiled at a colleague instead of avoiding eye contact.

The world around him hadn’t changed—the traffic still roared, deadlines still loomed, people still rushed—but Ayaan felt different.

His inner lantern, though small, flickered back to life.

Resistance from the World

But change is never easy. When Ayaan began to slow down, people noticed—and not always positively.

At work, his boss frowned when he chose to step outside for ten minutes of fresh air during lunch.

“You’re wasting time, Ayaan. Work harder now, relax later.”

His friends teased him when he skipped a late-night outing to get enough sleep.

“Come on, life is short! You’re missing out.”

Even his family questioned him.

“Why are you changing your routine? You should focus on earning more. Everyone’s running—don’t fall behind.”

For a moment, doubt crept in. Was he making a mistake by choosing presence over pressure? But then he remembered the lantern shop and the woman’s calm voice:

“When the lantern inside you glows, the world’s shadows can’t blind you.”

The Glow Spreads

Days turned into weeks. Ayaan’s new habits grew stronger. He began meditating in the mornings, walking in the evenings, and keeping his phone away before bed. He replaced junk food with simple, nourishing meals. Slowly, his body grew lighter, his mind clearer, and his heart more at ease.

Something remarkable began to happen—people noticed his calmness. His laughter felt genuine, his presence comforting. A colleague asked,

“How do you stay so calm under pressure?”

A friend admitted,

“I feel stressed all the time. But when I’m around you, I feel lighter.”

Ayaan realized his lantern was not only illuminating his own path—it was casting light for others too.

The Return to the Shop

One evening, Ayaan returned to the lantern shop. The elderly woman welcomed him with the same knowing smile.

“You’ve begun to light your lantern,” she said, without him needing to explain.

“Yes,” Ayaan replied. “But it’s hard. The world doesn’t stop rushing. People don’t understand.”

The woman nodded.

“They don’t need to understand. The world will always be noisy, materialistic, and restless. You cannot control that. But you can choose. Every day, every moment, you can choose whether to feed the shadows or the light. That is the real power you carry.”

Her words settled in his heart like a seed planted in fertile soil.

The Lesson of the Lantern

Over time, Ayaan learned a truth: the secret to living well in a materialistic world was not to run away from it, but to carry his own lantern within it.

Yes, bills had to be paid. Yes, responsibilities existed. Yes, the world would always demand more. But amidst all that, he had the power to pause, to breathe, to smile, to care for his body, to rest his mind, and to share kindness.

He discovered that true success was not how much he owned, but how much peace he carried. Not how fast he ran, but how brightly he shone.

The Moral

The world today is full of distractions, pressure, and endless chasing. But like Ayaan, each of us carries a lantern inside. When we nourish it—with health, mindfulness, balance, and gratitude—it shines brightly, guiding us through chaos.

And when one lantern shines, it inspires others to do the same—until even in the busiest, most materialistic city, small lights begin to glow everywhere.

✨ Moral of the Story:

We cannot stop the world from rushing, but we can choose to slow down. We cannot silence the noise outside, but we can nurture peace inside. The lantern within us—our health, joy, and calm—is the only true light that can guide us through today’s materialistic world.
